where to locate the engine code...avu aeb

I see loads of parts for sale that are engine specific, whats the easist way to find out the engine code of a Audi, VW, Seat or Skoda? is there a way to tell with a Vag-Com? I've noticed my brother-in-laws Skoda doesn't have a tag near the engine but a friend A3 does.

Any help would be great!!

Have a look in on the sticker in the boot of the car
Or the sticker on the inside page of the service book
On your log book there is usually the engine code on too

Engine code can also be found on the Cam Belt cover.
At lease it can for my 1998 A4.

My ebgine code is on the cylinder head. Pop off the plastic engine cover and the code should be clearly written on the top of the engine cover. It will be 3 letters. Should be easy to find. Also included on the first page of the service book as part of the car code.
