A4 B7 2.0t fsi, engine been rattling lately which got me thinking chain tensioner might be on way out, took to a local garage who are very good Indy specialists who advised checking oil pick up pipe in case lack of oil was issue, sump off all spotless so back to the chain being the issue, all stripped ready to remove variator to change chain and adjuster only to find variator bolt won’t shift ,its solid and snapped two of the special sockets required, firstly I presume there normal thread and secondly has anyone had similar issues? Also do these units cause rattling noises or are they pretty reliable? Thanks

Those bolts are in ****** tight believe me but they are normal bolts. If you’ve snapped 2 sockets but not rounded the bolt yet I’d suggest you’re using sub standard tools. The oem tool from Audi or the AST tool is the only ones I’d use, the rest are garbage

they are most likely standard thread but hardened steel , normally the bolt head will deform before the socket fails unless the sockets are swiss cheese.

Think the cams are just going to come out with chain attached then deal with it or at least deal with the chain or I can see either bolt shearing or rounding inside
