Finally got around to changing the temp sender. Needle now seems to stay on 90 now but the reading on the climate control (49) still doesn't match the gauge, it reaches 98 degrees when the needle is on 90.

Is the thermostat knackered?
 
Thats about right. The needle is software bias compared to the climate which reads actual temp. The needle will read 90 when the real temp is anywhere between 80 and 100.
