Tank System Error

Hi, I'm having a real problem with my 2014 S3 that I just can't seem to get sorted. About 6 weeks ago it came up with tank system malfunction error message and the accompanying red flashing fuel empty warning light on the fuel gauge. I know nothing about cars so looked it up on here and it didn't look a big deal, probably just needed a new sender. Booked it into a local and really well respected Audi specialist who found that the sender hadn't just failed but had literally burnt out. He actually said he hadn't seen that happen before and that it was a bit worrying that it had burnt out in the fuel tank! They replaced the sender but the error didn't go. So they decided it must be the other fuel tank sender. Anyway after it taking best part of a month to get hold of that second part because there was a problem sourcing it, they replaced it yesterday. They assumed that would sort the issue but it hasn't. They seem completely stumped and said they can't believe replacing the two parts hasn't solved the problem. They say they have checked the wiring and it is all showing as being fine but there is still "high resistance". None of this means much to me but as I said, they are pretty well thought of as a garage and they don't seem to know where to go with it next. I'm worried not just because it really bothers me that my car isn't right and I don't know how to get it fixed but also because if the first sender burnt out and there is still this "high resistance" them I'm concerned my car is potentially a fire risk? Any help/ideas would be massively appreciated because I'm really getting to the end of my tether.

No. I don't know exactly how they checked the wiring all he said was that, "the wiring is all fine". And he started talking about it maybe being a problem with some "pod" (can't remember the name of the pod) behind the instrument panel which would cost 1200 quid to replace and might not even be the problem! I've actually just booked it in for next week with a car electrics bloke to do a proper check on the wiring, hopefully he'll have some joy because I think generally even decent garages can be pretty average when it comes to the electrical side of things. Not sure what I'll do if he doesn't find anything, presumably I would then be looking at a long road to working out what it is and a lot of money being spent.
 
They need to use a test loom tbh, to rule out wiring, most people dont do this, you have to discount existing totally.

Cheers. Presumably the auto electrics guy will do that and hopefully it is an issue with the wiring. Don't even want to consider the alternatives.
 
I would make a point of asking them to test with new temp wires just laid across, doesn't need to be fitted unless it proves to be a wiring problem.

I find unless you specifically ask, allot of auto sparks dont follow the basics of fault finding, at the end of the day, if you're being paid for your time, then who cares what you have to do to test properly, some are lazy & refer to diag tools allot when it does need hands on approach so to speak.

Cheers NHN, appreciate your input. I will make sure to ask him to do that. Think he's a good auto electrician, I know quite a few local dealerships used to have him in one day a week to do their electrics work 10 years ago or so. Think he's also a bit "old school" so suspect he will do what you say anyway rather than relying on diagnostic tools. I'm pretty sure the garage I used initially will have only used diagnostic tools, seems very unlikely they would have done anything more than that. Gives me hope it might be a wiring issue.

Had it all checked by an auto electrician. Tested properly with temporary wiring. Wiring all fine but says he's 95% certain it needs a new instrument panel. Bit if a blow to say the least. God knows how much this is going to set me back.
