In the last couple of days I've started to get a rattle from the timing belt area on start up. When warm, it seems to go away.

Any idea what the cause will be? Is it a bearing / tensioner?

Engine is a 2.0tdi

Many thanks in advance.

A little more info.

The rattling worsens if I turn the wheel when stationary but also stops completely when I turn off the A/c unit inside the car.

Is this a problem with the a/c compressor or alternator pulley maybe?

I've booked it into the local Indy for next week but wondered if anyone has any thought?

Thanks

I would have guessed at a bearing somewhere on the auxiliary belt circuit - I think you may well have pinpointed the a/c pump/pulley.

Thanks for the replies and a bit of an update.

My local Indy replaced a thermostat switch (the fans were running far too excessively) and since that has been done the rattling has stopped. It is definitely the AC Compressor pulley and I'm assuming the reduced load is helping.

However, my Indy says that the pulley / clutch can't be replaced on the AC Compressor and it's a full replace job. Is that correct?

TIA
