Slight whining/chirp only in 5th gear

Hi, I have an 03 2.0 TDi BKD 6 speed manual on 125k miles.
In the last few months, I have noticed that when I downshift from 6th to 5th, I get a slight chirp/whine as I engage the clutch in 5th. I have also started noticing that when I'm coasting down a hill in 5th, I get the same quiet whine and a very slight high frequency vibration through the gear lever.
It only happens in 5th, and only ever off load. It is not loud, but it is worying me slightly as it is slowly getting worse.
I'm stumped! What are the possible causes?

Very interested to hear any info on this as mine is doing the same. also a3 2.0 bkd on 120k. Only does it coasting in 5th

I did speak to someone briefly about it and they mention 5th gear synchro

Interesting, I think my 2nd gear synchro is knackered as well; I sometimes have trouble doing 1st to 2nd if I'm accelerating hard. I assume ******** synchros mean rebuilding the gearbox...

Gearbox rebuild I've been told. No idea what needs changing in it though.
