Could be something simple like a boost leak, check the simple stuff first before jumping in with replacing the turbo

Yea go with what smurfworth said, seems a little hasty to be assuming its the turbo itself from a low boost problem. Maybe worth taking it to someone else for a second opinion on it?
Just got the info, it's not boosting till 4000rpm instead of 3000rpm and boosts at 1.9 instead of 2.25
Thanks guys, this is the second garage it's been to, first couldn't find anything and second has found the hole in the tubro/downpipe gasket.
Ah now this makes more sense!
Whereabouts are you based? Just so we can see what reputable tuners are nearby as it sounds like you've been dealing with clowns which doesn't help. As smurfworth said, they should be checking the simple things first and then work their way up to the turbo, as automatically assuming it's seized up sounds like they're just trying to get as much money out of you as they can.
What a nightmare you've had, this is all because some ponker couldnt be assed to do a proper job when putting back to standard. Some ppl just dont care which is poor form.
Well done to your guy for finding and fixing the problems.
I was actually wondering if the mileage stated isnt what is says and has been clocked somehow, which would explain the excessive wear and tear you've experienced. just a thought
Glad to hear that your S3 is finally in working order bud, even though £1200 is still a fair amount of money, you've done pretty well there all things considered.
Can't believe the stupidity/ignorance of some people though, what an absolute joke, hopefully they'll feel the sting at some point of someone else's mare.
At least it's all sorted now and glad you're now properly enjoying the S3 as it really is a great car!
So time for another update, couple of months later, cars only just flipped 35,000 miles (not bad for an 07' plate).
Only one EML light since the new turbo fitted and it fixed itself within a day. cold start issues still about but no-where near as much. Speaking to a local VAG expert, carbon clean and injector refurb could be all that's needed.
On another note, tires are goosed on the front budgets on the back, so got a set of Continental winters for the front and Contact 5's for the rear, wait till summer and I'll get another set of 5's to match the back.
Other than tires, the heated mirrors have stopped working (rear screen still works) so picked up a set of an A3 to steal the glass - potentially get the casings hydrodipped and chucked on as well, but not sure yet.
Also got some B-Pillar trim to paint gloss black, new rear wiper motor and 8V style flatblade wiper blade and LED interior bulbs.
Not a lot of big things happening but lots of little things on the go.
Maybe update with pictures next time
35K is very good on an 07 car, beats my 62K by a fair bit! But it just goes to show how poorly the previous owner treated it considering everything you've had to repair, it's such a shame I just don't get the mindset of some people..
What's been done/looked into so far with the cold starts? Mine still has the intermittent (predominately) hot start up issue, changing the battery which was 9 years old at the time seemed to significantly reduce the troubled cold start ups (can't remember last time it happened).
Sounds good about the gloss black B-Pillars, it will finish off the outside nicely. It's the last external change I want to make to mine (bar lowering it if that comes under the same area) but I'm skinny skint..
Looking forward to seeing the pics in your next update, I really need to get around to doing my build thread!
So far:
Diverter Valve.
New Turbo, actuator and oil lines.
Battery tested (found to be fine).
Boost leaks (visually inspected and refitted whilst engine out).
MAF cleaned - going to try unplug and see if it still persists.
New coil packs.
New spark plugs.
Had a scope down the inlet and the valves look like they will need cleaned, there's also a slight misfire at idle. Could well point to injectors and/or the inlet runner flaps are stuck.
VCDS scan and take it from there, in all honesty I may have to sell it soon for a house deposit, so I need it working. Pressure is on!
This has been great to learn lots of new things, we sort of new it was going to be a project at time of purchase. However the list seems endless and it's starting to have an effect on every aspect of my life at the minute, seems a bottomless pit of disappointment.
Really has put me off any Audi's in future.
