Rev Counter working intermittently

As title, it works ok sometimes then not at all !!
Could it be a connection fault ??
If so, is the cluster easy enough to open and remove the rev counter, give it a clean and re assemble ??

It could be the plug behind the cluster getting loose or possibly the cluster going bad. What model year is it? Does it have DIS?

Its a 2004 2 litre tdi, and yes it has DIS
Will remove the the instrument cluster and have a look

Cluster is easy to get apart, not sure about fiddling with the motors though!

When you get the clear lens off the cluster the PCB with the tacho etc on it just pulls straight up and away from the rear housing. It's plugged in to a second PCB below.
