    Hi all,
So finally replaced the shot motor in my A3 2.0 tfsi quattro,
I need some induction advice please,
I picked up a recently rebuilt axx motor with integrated drop in rods, S3 top end, injectors and intercooler, I also have a turbo back milltek with sports cat, this is where I'm running out of cash lol,
I'm currently sticking with the stock ko3 although fully rebuilt, also stock hpfp,
I am aware I will need to map this from current stage 1 and have this arranged with Ben at AmD,
Question is will my pipercross panel filter be ok for now please?
I do plan to do hpfp and possibly hybrid ko3 but not for some time when funds permit will the panel filter cope with those mods also?
I just think decent CAI are grossly overpriced also I dont want the noise from an open system.
Any feedback suggestions advice really appreciated thanks guys and stay safe

I ran with the std intake on stage2+ S3 for a couple of years - the only mod I had was the samco intake pipe (from the turbo to the MAF) which had dyno proved gains of 12hp but also better spool. Top end power was restricted (I was running 340bhp on a conservative dyno) but I had shed loads of torque (400lb/ft) and really fast spool. I fitted an open intake (revo) and immediately felt a loss in spool along with too much chirping noise from the DV+ so bought a used VWR sealed intake.

Thanks for your reply buddy really appreciate your time and feedback,
I thought you needed a lot more mods for stage 2+ though mate?
I've been told I defo need turbo back, fmic and hpfp as well as CAI?
    Cheers pal

No, you can get away with just hpfp, and downpipe for stage2+. IC depends if you track the car, live in a hot climate or want max bragging rights.

No real gains from cat back. You can even get away with no rs4 valve however the std one will be maxxed out and mine failed after 18 months. You obviously need a custom map to account for your hardware changes too.

CAI adds more breathing at the top end for sure but I noticed some more lag when I borrowed one to fit on my car, which wasn't what I wanted at the time. Plus the std airbox is good for 350bhp so you won't get near that with a K03, even a hybrid.

I ran APR stage 1+ for a while with the standard airbox making 337bhp on an S3. It was using a Pipercross type filter. A custom map would have seen higher BHP and torque values.
It is possible to smooth the inner surfaces of the airbox and remove some of the supporting struts.
On the K03 turbo you will have more headroom than the K04. A stage 1 K03 is likely to have a similar BHP figure as a standard S3 and they both use the same airbox so the K04 will need breathing modifications sooner as you go up the tuning scale.
I tried the Samco hose as I could see the advantage instead of the concertina turbo inlet pipe but I found the fit on the example I bought to be terrible and I could not clamp it to the airbox outlet neatly.
The + part of the map is the hpfp and it really allows the torque to build. I did buy the Loba pump but there are cheaper options such as VIS available now. Also preowned parts become available as folks change their cars back to standard before selling.

    Hey guys thanks very interesting,
I'm hoping to hit the 300 bhp mark with what I have,
Do you think this is possible? my motor is S3 spec now with turbo back but unfortunately the ko3, I know this will restrict things somewhat,
Is there any advantage of the RS4 valve? It is such a cheap mod,
Yeah will be getting the custom map in a couple of weeks once the ko3 comes back from being rebuilt,
I have been told the turbo inlet outlet pipes are a waste of time and money especially if I'm running a ko3?
    Cheers fellas

The RS4 valve is a cheap part but it it very difficult to fit without the correct kit. Only needed at stage 2+

I would sort out the hpfp internals as you are going to miss out on the mid range torque.
I would not be too concerned about the K03 turbo as it spools up quicker than a K04 and so there is more low down punch. Less at the top end of the rev range though but most daily driving is in the 1.5 _ 4K revs range.

Who's doing your custom map as they really need to know what they're doing if you're running a K03 with some S3 bolt-ons?
Did you look at injectors as these may be a limiting factor (sorry, not very clued up on K03 tuning)?

If the OP is still running the same turbo there is no need to look at the injectors apart from having them cleaned out depending on how many miles they have done.
Change to a K04 or a hybrid K03 then yes.

Hey buddy no worries appreciate all feedback,
Amd tuning in Essex are doing live map on the rollers,
I have told Ben what I have but will go through it all again once I'm there,
    I have S3 injectors

The panel filter will not be as free flowing as a Revo intake but you wanted a quiet intake. This is a compromise.

Panel filter would work quite well if the whole stock intake on the ea113 engine wasn't a joke. Someone had a crazy idea to put the airbox in the engine cover with weird path and cross sections (on top of soaking all the heat).
On the mk7 gti/r where they got propper airbox and normal pipe to the turbo inlet, panel filter does great job (up to hybrid/big turbo setup power).

    So there begs the question,
Is it possible to modify standard airbox piping to retain the box?

See post #5 above - there is a picture too on the internet - I think some guy in Spain was adamant he wanted to keep his stock airbox, so modified it and added the Samco turbo pipe.

Personally, unless you want to go above 330hp then the stock airbox will be ok - you will get slightly more power with an aftermarket intake but not as much as the manufacturers will have you believe. The Samco pipe made 12ps on my own car on an independent dyno and improved spool up noticeably. That was with a stock airbox and a K&N filter.

    Thanks for this advice everyone

They were from a K04, however if you're aiming for 300 bhp then the results will be broadly similar.
