Gearbox oil change needed ?

I have heard people say 'it is a sealed unit & manufacturers intended the oil in the gearbox to last the life of the car' etc

But my logic tells me surely it gets cruddy and/or broken down over time

Im doing another 'engine' oil change soon, so wondered if its worth doing a 'gearbox' oil change too ?

If so, what would be best to use for my A3 1.8t 98 agu ?

Drain plug underneath, fill plug on front of box, loosen fill plug 1st, don't want to drain it and find you can't undo fill plug, nothing wrong with OEM gearbox oil, about £13 for 2 litre's.

What's the oem part number , or oil spec ?

Most vag boxes can use a GL5 , not any old GL5 though.
