gearbox malfunction

so, been away for 3 weeks and car has not moved, came home today and started car, put into reverse to move out and just reved, without moving...., then heard a slight tapping noise and warning came up gearbox malfunction, stop engine and put in P.
also happens if i try selecting drive......just revs and dont move

i fear the worst tbh......any advice??

Disconnect battery for short while & retest.

Do you have VCDS or similar to read error codes?

thanks guys i will try the battery thing, dunno if the aa will be able to help

ok so the aa came and got 1 error but he only had a basic bosch reader thing, guess ill need to get someone with vcds

turns out it was gearbox driveshaft sheared outside of gearbox......thank goodness

I had an A6 q sport with tiptronic in the past. Something blew on the gearbox with a massive cloud of oil. It would have potentially cost me more for investigation and repairs than the car was worth.
