Hello, I have a audi a6 c6 Le Mans 2.0 tdi 2010 with 140k mileage. Car drives well. I went shopping and when I went to start my car on my return the gearbox malfunction sign appeared out of the blue. I got startled but I switched my car off and on again and it was gone. Is this the start of something bad that I need to get checked or was it just a computer error.

It could be your battery is starting to fail, imperceptibly at first but your car can tell better than you when voltages start to drop.
I started to get all sorts of error messages when my newish battery was on the way out. I went back to ECP and they exchanged under warranty and everything returned to normal - happy days.
Other than that get the car scanned using VCDS to see if any error codes were left behind indicating something else may be causing the intermittent gearbox message.
