Drive shafts worn?

I have a 2002 A4 3.0 Multitronic. 90,000 on the clock

I have noise that sounds for all the world like inner CV joints. Click/clunk on acceleration and a little less obvious on braking.
I changed the inner joints (outers were changed last year and 5,000 miles ago) all for quality items and it has made no difference.
I did notice that on one of the inner joints I didn't have to drive the bearings onto the shaft they just pushed on easily with my hand. Is it possible that the splines of the shaft itself are worn? Or is there another possible cause of the noise?

Any help much appreciated
My plan was to lob on a very cheap aftermarket shaft (complete with joints) to diagnose it for sure. I'm getting pretty good and whipping the shafts out and replacing them!
