Car was in main dealer yesterday for warranty work, whilst there they wouldn’t test drive it because one of my rear tyres had a cut in it.... so had to commit to 2 new rear tyres (hankook evo’s)(no big deal as they price matched).

Went to pick it up less than 2 miles down the road on a dual carriageway I notice a vibration at 70mph ish. Ring dealer who said bring it back this morning.

They have called me this afternoon to say they have tried balancing the tyres again and then used some bit of kit which is telling them to move the tyres left and right on the wheel?! Has anyone ever heard of this??? However they can’t get the machine to validate the setup, so they are telling me the tyres are out of shape and ordering brand new ones for tomorrow. No issue with that but I’ve just never come across this before, is this one of those things or is something a miss?

I wouldn’t expect it on a hankook, however some tyres can have defects. I remember i had some cheap ditch finder tyre put on a car 5-6 years ago and driving at 80mph it would cause vibration. Had it balanced in 3 different shops with the same problem, ended up replacing it and problem was sorted.

I am dealing with the same issue with brand new Pirelli P Zero. One of the tires had 11 kg of side force when rotated in a machine that is balancing and inspecting its rotation while simulating it is on a road. It is called "adaptive balance" if I am not mistaken. They've done something to the tire and it went below the red threshold but now when I drive at 140 km/h I am having loud dull sound which I don't like so I am going back to the garage tomorrow.

That’s really odd as hankook are now premium tyres. Never heard that happening before.

Too many new tyres in long term storage unsold during lockdown? What's the manufacturing date codes on them?

Did you get anywhere with the dull sound you were experiencing? I've got a dull noise coming from front wheel that i suspect could be tyre noise or something, though brand new car so not sure.

Yes @ahm , I went to the tire store and filled a complain. They've retested all 4 wheels and despite the machine was telling the right rear tire is ok it was visible with naked eye that the outer part of the thread about 1 inch had uneven rotation. They made a clip for Pirelli and took off the tire. I had to put my winter tires because the complain takes 2 weeks to be approved or denied by Pirelli. So a few days ago I got phone call - they informed me Pirelli agreed this tire is out of shape and since I've driven it like 1000 km they will replace it with brand new one for free.
Since I had my winter tires mounted I have no dull sound anymore.

Sorry I never updated this thread after it was sorted. Ended up with 3 visits to main dealer. 2 sets of hankooks and they couldn’t sort it. They agreed there was an issue on test drives as the car was vibrating at higher speeds. They then asked if I would swap them to continentals at their cost. I agreed. Car has been ok since. So not really sure what went on with it, but needed the car back after them having it for over a week on and off.
