Bluetooth my phone won't connect.

So I've had the car a few months now and didn't realise my car had Bluetooth. Even though it had a phone carrier in the arm rest..
After reading the thread about hidden things your car has I thought I'd try my luck with the Bluetooth. So I turned on the radio/SatNav looked for the car and it came up Audi, so I tried to pair it to my phone, having looked in the log book it says use code 1234. So I tried that and it kept saying failed.
Any advice as to what I'm doing wrong.

What if the bluetooth symbol has gone but it used to connect fine?

Thank you for your replies, I've sorted it now. When I retried it it came up with Audi uhv & four numbers so I put them in after everything else hadn't worked and straight away it paired with my phone, so I'm guessing that a previous owner changed it from the factory settings .
