Hello all, I come in search of advice. Driving down the road, suddenly the car stutters as if a misfire occured, then followed by what sounds like a metallic scraping/grinding coming from underneath.

Initially though it must have picked a stone up and lodged it in the calliper somewhere but all wheels are free and the noise can't be replicated. Engine runs fine and pulls well so surely it can only be drivetrain related. Upon reversing, (this is a manual) it's as if it hesitates and something is stuck?

Any ideas guys?

The clutch doesn't slip at all and the car drives as normal barring the metallic scraping! Only does it when driving also, no noise at all when stopped

Might be prop shaft. Do a search on this and you will find similar symptoms to what you describe (generally on older cars).

Just an update to this. Turns out it was the transfer case at fault. Replacement sourced and fitted now all is well.

Does anyone know what would cause a failure after 29k miles?
