Best way to flush coolant?

Hi All,

I've removed the coolant from my audi a3 2.0 tdi by pulling the radiator hose down by the drivers side. I dont believe I have flushed an entire 5 litres out of the system. I would like to run water through the system. The Haynes manual states to do a coolant flush with a garden hose I'd need to remove the thermostat and run the water through the coolant tank

Is this the only way to perform a flush? If so, do I need to remove the thermostat or just the hoses around it?

Remove it I’d say as to do a complete flush wouldn’t the ‘stat have to be open?
