Gets a little louder but not a huge amount. You can always unplug the valves if you want, that lets some extra noise out but obviously means you lose the ability to switch loud to quiet.

When I test drove one that had around 4000 miles it popped and crackled on the downshift a few times so I suspect it does, most cars usually do. My focus st has started to pop a little bit now it’s hit over 3000 miles.

I was thinking more of leaving wires dangling and subject to water damage etc..

im tempted as its a quick fix and reversible too (would rather VCDS option but needs must!)

so how would you ensure the valves are open before unplugging?

    cheers

Ah, gotcha! I just used the finger of a latex glove and a couple cable ties then made sure it was positioned so any water that did get in could drain out. Mine were nice and dry when I went to use them again. But that connector would be much better. Only issue is the connector on the exhaust value can still get corroded I guess...

In terms of making sure they’re open, they’re all spring loaded to be open so by unplugging them they default to the open position regardless, so don’t worry about that part.

Got mine unplugged too, wrapped in insulating electric tape and then held with tie wraps so it doesn't unwrap, and also the cables holding the exhaust connectors were tie wrapped as close as to the body structure will allow to prevent any noise or ingress from Dirt/Water.

well I might take a punt then.. also would cause less conversation with an Audi tech why I have a pink latex glove tied round my exhaust under exception :):):)

    is it a noticeable difference?

    cheers..

Yes! Mostly at lower RPMs and startups for sure. I don't really notice any drone either which some others have mentioned.

Judge for yourself here on a cold startup with the valves unplugged:

I have that and a K&N filter on mine and while it's not super loud, you can definitely hear the turbo spool and the dump valve opening when you put the window down.

so does it look like the OEM ? (that was my next Q!) looks like its 70euro so probably screw us for £70.

however always been a fan of BMC.

    will investigate a supplier

Yeah, to my eye it looks like it would be a direct replacement for the paper OEM one. And the S4 is in the compatibility list so presumably you'd be able to send it back if it didn't work anyway. Haha.

The universal K&N filter I bought was £38 and works just fine, but doesn't have the Audi specific fitting so I'm sure the BMC version would be a better option overall.

lol £70 for an air filter that will make no difference to anything, apart from your warranty.

Sh1t you mean this wont add 30% more power? dam what have i done!

also not sure why this would affect warranty as its still an air filter just not a paper version. always had drop in filters in the past with no issues with servicing or the dealer.

More like 20% more power and turbo sound. Honest. Butt dyno doesn't lie and it's completely accurate! :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

I agree about the warranty though, there's no reason for it to void it so long as it's actually providing some filtering. I can understand them having an issue if you ran no filter or something and the turbo was damaged, but these are good quality filters so don't know why they'd have an issue.

Cool stuff. Let me know what you think about the sound and how your butt dyno reacts. I couldn't notice anything extra to be honest, maybe just seems to breathe a bit easier than with the OEM at higher revs.

Fitted tonight as a perfect direct replacement (twist fit with a retaining hook, exactly the same as OEM)

I was amazed what came out though.. so 11 months and 3600miles and found half a birds next in my air box! Also WTF is the cotton wool extra layer ??

Car sounds different, butt dyno feels like it pulls slightly better. Makes a pleasent noise Too.

I await patiently the ECS pipe for my final verdict ..

    Sounds good! Literally. Haha.

I think the foam stuff is what they seem to call a snow filter or something? Could be wrong. If so, I assume it’s because the filter could be exposed to snow in the right circumstances and maybe that stops it just soaking the paper filter? Don’t know.

Yes the wraps helps prevent snow from packing into the pleats. K&N mention it here https://www.knfilters.com/snowmobile.htm Although you wouldn't expect a A4 to encounter the same conditions as a snowmobile...

Agreed! That said, I'm surprised at how direct the piping is to the airbox on my S4 from the front grill so I can see why they did it as a 'just in case'. Although it would take some serious snow and some time driving in it to see snow get into the box I'd imagine.

Nah... Gonna sound like an old fart here but I've never had it on any other cars that had much more open access to the elements and never had an issue. So unless this engine is hugely susceptible to a few flakes of snow then I can't imagine it being an issue in the UK at all.

It's possible, that's what I was saying before. If I remember rightly, the feed comes from the top of the front grill and is piped into the airbox, so it's possible that it could happen. That said, it would take a lot of snow to be hitting the area where the intake is and the heat of the engine bay air not melting it before it would build up on the filter I imagine.

Wow, that does look restrictive. If it looks like a cataclysmic blizzard is due any time and you have to go on a trip, its not to tough to swap the oem air-filter back in right...

I was disappointed how much time it DIDNT take.. I like tinkering in my garage .. and I was done in a few minutes, its a few screws then filter slides and locks into place .. very well designed alas not tricky at all :S

I know what you mean. I was a bit like 'oh, is that it?'. Haha. Same with the ECS intake hose though, it's just two clips to unscrew.

If you want a bit of a challenge then you should try fitting an exhaust, the downpipe connections are a pain in the backside...

so just a little update for anyone wanting a little bit more noise.. so im not sure if its taken a few miles for the MAF to adjust (im on a training course so only driven about 6 miles since the install) but this morning its definatly sounding better( A LOT BETTER!) , even my daughter on the way to school said the car sounded faster :).

car has a lower groan at low revs and the turbo spooling and dump valve seen very loud compared to what they used to sound like.

im happy that the filter is filtering better than OEM according to the chart but most importantly the noise sounds great!

"It is made of highly performing materials that allow an increased air flow combined with a more efficient filtration, guaranteeing containment of all impurities from as small as 7 microns (compared to OEM's 10 microns)"

    IMG_2765.JPG

it might sound like an expensive placebo to some on here, but I can assure you unless you are deaf you will notice a difference with this bolt on upgrade.

gotta be worth it for smiles right?

EDIT: I now have 3751miles on the clock
