Q2 Audi Q2 Powered Tailgate Retrofit/Folding Mirrors

Hi Guys & Gals,

Since moving to my S-Line Q2 there were a few things I was missing from my previous Mercedes GLA, the most notable was the powered tailgate and folding mirrors. Over the last few months I was doing some research on how I can retrofit these things to my Q2.

I previously owned an A3 8V and retrofitted folding mirrors, it was pretty simple - all it required was fitting and some VCDS. With my Q2 it was a little more complex. I found a pair of folding mirrors from a black edition car with side assist (my current mirrors have side assist) and proceeded to install them, in the same way, I did my A3. Unfortunately, I quickly ran into an issue once I had coded it - only the driver's side would fold in. From further inspection of the passenger's door, I could see that the port where the mirrors plug into had significantly fewer pins than the driver's side. With the help of @DJAlix we clocked that the passenger's door has a "Low" module while the driver's door has a "High" module...I thought this was unusual as surely like my A3 you would have the same module in both doors, given one os for the left side and the other for the right. Again with the help of Alix I was able to source a door module from a Golf R and install in, unfortunately, I ran into more issues. Once the module was installed the mirrors would fold but everything was revised...locking the car would close the driver's mirror but open the passengers and as well as that the mirror switch was reversed...down was up and up was down. So once again I enlisted the help of @DJAlix who knew what the issue was straight away. I went down to see him (Covid safe) and he parameterized the door module and everything was working great!

Onto the powered tailgate. I had ordered a kit from Alixpress of genuine Audi Q2 powered struts that came with the wiring loom, button, module and anything and everything you'd need to retrofit it to the car. As this was the first time Alix and I had done something like this it was a learning process for both of us but never a dull moment when we decide to do something in the freezing cold haha. A few hours later we figured all the wiring and location of the parts and we'd successfully retrofitted the powered tailgate. Everything works as if from the factory and I couldn't be happier with @DJAlix service. I've been going to him for years with all my Audi's and he really knows his stuff. We, unfortunately, didn't install the door release switch...mainly because I didn't bother to order one and also because I never used it in my previous car so didn't see much point. To most this retrofit isn't necessary but once you've previously had something and get used to it, its very hard to go back. I just want to say a final thank you to @DJAlix because without him I couldn't do any of my whacky retrofits!! I will post a video soon, haven't had a chance yet.

Thats how they come from the factory unless you have folding mirrors it seems.

bizzare! if they only made a single unit that could do it all, it would be so much more efficent
Indeed but they are learning. Newer vehicles like the E-tron actually have everything, every option on them but deactivated in software. If you then want an option you can purchase it via the MMI.

this is so much better! revenue opportunity for them and effiecncy savings too!
7/8 years ago i was in japan and speaking to someone at suzuki HQ at a work event, and they were saying to me that all there cars by 2020 would be off the same base to save on development costs or be bought in from 3rd partys/joint agreements - was the only way they could continue to offers cars at the price point they wanted and deliver quality you would expect form japanese company

@Callum Jarvis - what next ? HUD ;)

Hiya,

Unfortunately it doesn't close with the boot button, but not an issue for me.

haha, to be honest with the Virtual cockpit I think the HUD might be a little overkill. But who knows what I'll do in the future haha.

There are already a few vehicles that have the option of upgrades through software and I am sure more will follow...

Hiya,

such a first world problem but i find it really anoying that you cant close the boot from the buttom in the drivers side door or via the remote - only y the botton on the boot

@DJAlix - do you know if this can be changed via coding?

Need advanced key / keyless entry and virtual pedal for remote closing.
