car gets starved of diesel when approx half tank. Have been told that there will be 2 lift pumps in tank Is this correct ? If so which one is likely to be the problem

That is weird, my 2.5 TDI had only 1 fuel pump that whas the diesel pump it self a VP44. It's just 1 tank 62L, what you describe is more like a problem for a B6 or an A6 C5/6

If it's Quattro then it has 2 pumps, I had the exact same issue, I installed a boost pump in the driver side tank as I had a cracked fuel tube, to keep filling the passenger side tank, for about a month or so, till I got an original tube from a used car.
By checking the tubes in passenger side you'll probably fix it.
