[How To] HBA Retrofit on 8V/MQB Platform

Hi to you all!
I have a audi a3 8v 2.0 tdi (crlb engine) made in 07.2015 with bi-xenon and auto lights (no AFS/no cornering lights). My car came with a regular frameless mirror without any function (not even auto dimming).
I bought a mirror from a breakyard and it has the code 8T0857511AD.




I made all the wiring (it is a 7 pin mirror) and i connected as per elsawin (except J533 can connections) this way:
- pin no. 1 to power
- pin no. 2 to ground
- pin no. 3 to Can bus extended high (orange/gray wire in pin no.5 in t17a - low left A Pillar)
- pin no. 8 to Can bus extended low (orange/brown wire in pin no.6 in t17a - low left A Pillar)
I did not connect the rest of the wires yet because i do not have the auto-dimming side mirrors and i did not find any black/blue wire in my front interior light module.

I added the 20 High Beam Assist Module to the 19 Can Gateway and i assured it is "coded" in the instalation list.
I coded the 09 Central Electronics and made the required adaptations as per the on line instructions - when i push once the high beam lever to the front i get the symbol in the cluster as if the HBA is activated and i get no error message in the DIS. If i remove one or both of the can connections, i get an HBA error message in the DIS - so i think the can connections are ok.

The problem is that the HBA system is not working (the auto-dimming feature work fine).
As you can see in the autoscan file, there is no comunication between the Can Gateway and the HBA module and i also can not connect to the HBA module with my genuine hex+can interface. So i can not code anything to it. I drove with the HBA activated (simbol present in the DIS) above 60 km/h and above 100 km/h, but there is no reaction regarding the low/high beam change.

Is there any way to make the HBA to work even if this mirror is not specific to a3 8v? Has anyone managed to do this?

Any kind of help is really appreciated.

If you cannot talk to the HBA control module then it’s never going to work. You either have:

1) a faulty control module
2) a power or earth issue
3) a CAN issue

Need to check power related connections and CAN voltages / wiring continuity.
 
I've fitted these to 2 of my cars but only using mirrors 81A and 8so with camera . These have a lens opposed to the 8t0 you have with some sort of photocell.
I think you have the wrong mirror for the 8v .

The dimming mirror is separate, it’s a self contained device. Not being able to communicate with the 20 control module is a major issue as if you cannot talk to it then the car cannot send signals and messages to it.
 
Seperate from what ?
The dimming mirrors that are used on the a3 8v with hba without a5 module camera are not seperate as they're in the housing of the rear view dimming mirror.
Do you think a 8T0 part number is compatible with the 8v ?

Dimming mirror = dumb = no coding. It’s self contained and functions independently from anything else. Just needs power and earth. The fact that some mirror housings have high beam assist in them has nothing to do with dimming function.

Not really sure how else to say it, if you cannot talk to control module 20 it’s not gonna work. Even if it’s not compatible you should still be able to talk to it.

You need a mirror with camera from an MQB platform vehicle, the camera you have fitted is from an Audi A4/A5 which is not MQB platform part

I understand what you all people are saying and i thak you.
So, even if the mirror/hba module is not compatible with my car, should i be able to “talk to it”?
Before i come to terms that the mirror/hba module is faulty, am i right to believe that extended can connections are ok? I mean that if i remove one can connection (does not matter if it is the low or the high) i get the “hba fault” message in DIS. Does this mean that the can connections are ok?
I also want to say that i did this test: rear dimming mirror with light on it (as from behind the car) - the autodimming is active; if i put the car in reverse, the autodimming continues to be active. Is this normal? I thought that when the car is in reverse, the autodimming function should not be active. And from where is this information taken (about the car being in reverse gear)?
If the reverse gear signal is sent through can connection, then this would mean that the can connections i made, are not ok. If this is the case, how do i test if these extended can connections are ok?
 
Start with the basics please. Seems that your 12v and earth are ok but whip out a multimeter and test them anyway to confirm, then probe your CAN to see if you have voltage.

If fully wired up then your mirror should dim but only in forward gears. Dimming should turn off so you can see backwards when reversing (connection to BCM). Dimming is also disabled when the interior reading lights are on if wired in.

But what do you mean by “connection to bcm”? Elsawin does not specify such a connection …
 
Reversing signal for dimming mirror comes from BCM, but yes CAN if HBA.

My view on this is that your CAN is not working and as posted above you don’t have the correct HBA mirror. Need to fix the CAN first else it’s like trying to make a phone call on an iPhone without charging the battery, and trying to do anything but charge the battery and expect it to work!

I hate auto cruise. Jump on a uk motorway, set cruise at a safe distance and relax… then someone jumps in the gap and you slow down and have to then back off and start all over again… and again, and again, rinse and repeat lol.
