Hi,

I live in between Huddersfield, Sheffield and Manchester and I'm looking for a garage to do a timing belt on my A4 Avant with the BDG engine. All the specialists I've rung have been eager to do the job until I tell them which engine. Can anyone recommend a good place/person to do the job for me or tell me what to look for/ask?

I've been quoted from £420 to £925 for the job too, roughly what should it cost?

Cheers

Paul

This is becoming a bit of a dilemma. My 04 was done over 5 years ago by a clever man in London and has run well ever since. He charged about £500 and included new pump and stat and all belts. We drove up from Southampton cos he had such a good reputation and it was hard to find a capable man at a reasonable price.Job took most of the day and we watched so could see it was tricky. The previous attempt had been botched and the timing was badly out so very pleased to get it right.Hope you can find someone like that near you.I would leave it until you can find the right person

They quoted £925 but someone told me that they won't replace the guide wheel bits because they are not known to break. I'll try and get to speak to the service manager and ask what they actually do. At least I know they will have the equipment to tune the injection pump!

I'm not familiar with diesel engine codes nor prices in your area, which I appreciate isn't much help to you, but I do know that Audi are desperate to claw back business from indies on older cars and the decent ones up here offer fixed price timing belt, fluid and brake jobs (all subsidised by Audi themselves, not the franchise).

Definitely worth having a chat, IMO. If they don't know about or offer these deals then they're probably not worth using.

No doubt Audi would do a proper job but £925 is prohibitive so it would be interesting if you find a subsidised quote.Cant see why they would want to give a lot away though

If you can make it down to Birmingham on Sunday, and you have all the parts, I can do your timing service. And yeah, I know it’s a V6 TDI. I had the same engine in my 2000 B5 2.5 V6 TDI Quattro Sport. It’s not a terrible job to do.
