I dont think VW units will work in an Audi as the CAN protocols are different. I'm not 100% certain though. You should be able to pick an Audi kit for £250 ish.

You need the CAN gateway recoding or it will throw loads of error codes.

Personally I wouldnt bother updating the software, it makes very little difference. Audi dont offer any facility for downloads. Search the usual Torrent sites etc. I might have a copy of 0650 somewhere if thats what your after?

Its for MMI as you say, not RNS-E. As its 3 years old I would be surprised if demand was very high!

0650 is the current (Euro) S/W. A new version will be on the 2009 DVD's which are out in the next few weeks though. I'm unsure where the list of improvements is from but only no.1 is true I'm afraid.

RNS-E cant play DVD's. You need an external player.

S3 screen can be done with VAG-COM. You'll need to move the BOSE pin. Your FM radio reception will also suffer but I guess you have already read up on that.....

You cant update the HW version. 0650 is on the latest map DVD. Or if you only want the lastest SW you can download just the SW. The new (2009) DVD should be out in nov/dec which will have a newer version on it. 0650 doesnt add much, it fixes a minor bug in the MP3 playback mix option, and...

My mate had an awesome install/enclosure done by SQ+ in Manchester. That was about 2 years and the quality of the job was top notch, Hopefully getting them to do an install in my A4 in the next few months.
