I recently had trouble with my S3 running rough almost misfiring, after vag-com pointing towards maf sensor and knock sensor i decided to start with the first, after replacing the mass air meter with a genuine new one i found no difference.
Back to basics...
My S3 uses a fair bit so does my VW diesel van, its due to the low friction engine and normal to use 1 litre every 1000 my be a bit less (depends how you drive it) mines tends to use more on short journeys. Can get expensive though if you use reccomended oil which only comes in 1 litre top ups!!
All oils are rated by API rating, the higher the letter the better the oil quality, all car manufacturers have their reccomended brands most of which only come in 1 litre bottles and at more cost. The case with mine and most S3's is common and a litre of oil will in fact last you only 600-1000...
