Yeah they really aren't all that expensive. Especially since GSF currently has 25% off discs, couple of brembo ones will set you back £60. You could probably have the edge sanded down if you really wanted, though for £60 I'd be more inclined to just buy new discs. Your choice though!

You will need to buy & fit a new wiper stalk with buttons for around £30 and then have someone with VCDS come and activate the DIS.

If you have the base model it doesn't come with DIS sadly. Do you have the LCD screen between the dials? If so then DIS can be added with not a lot of effort at all.

I did this a few months back on my 1.9TDIe. Assuming yours looks something like this: It's really easy to do, all you need is a new wiper stalk with the DIS control buttons on the end (circa £30) and like 10minutes with VCDS to turn everything on.
