Just had a thought; are you finalising these DVD's when you burn them so that no further sessions can be written? If you're not, then this may be the issue. You'll need to finalise RW type discs as well.

I don't think it matters what brand of discs you use; brand X -R should be the same as brand Y -R. I personally have used Verbatim, TDK, Sony, Maxell, Memorex and supermarket own brands, and have noticed no difference between any of them; usually I buy what's cheapest for 50 or 100 etc...
