i doubt you will have any such problems when you get the car running 4wd, bit of a waste of effort doing all that while its in FWD mode, just cutting yourself short when you reconnect rear wheels!

if they were "bouncing" its possible that the light unit inside has came loose from the adjustment motors if it was a broken angle sensor, the "limp mode" is that it will set the lights to the lowest possible setting, and flag a code (had this on my old S4).

the B5 A4 doesnt have an engine management light, dont worry about it
