MOT time and it's a fail on the number plates

The tester has seen something 'different' and tried to find a failure point to match it. I've had this before with something else and even after arguing it he wouldn't have it that he might be wrong! Obviously I've not been back since. The incorrectly formed failure doesn't mean plastic or...

    Driveshaft Change

Turned out it's a 6pt on that side...and a 12pt on the other, obviously ones been changed lol. I went with the 200Nm + 180°...but couldn't turn more than about 90°. Doubt it'll fall off anyway.

    Recommendations Selling Write Off

Have you bought it back? If not, I thought you got the payout, the insurers sell it to a salvage yard, then the salvage yard sell them on ebay or Copart etc. I've bought a few cat D/N cars...don't have the cash spare atm for yours though. Have you thought about repairing it yourself? That's...

    Driveshaft Change

Ok thanks. Do you know what size the spline hub bolt is?

    Driveshaft Change

Afternoon, I need to change the short (nearside) shaft on my FWD 8P 2.0 TDI. I've got male spline tools for the inner CV bolts - but does anyone know the correct torque setting for those? Been a few weeks since I was doing the suspension but I seem to remember it had a large 12pt bolt at...

    CAT D

The categories have now been changed, so C & D are now S & N. Cat S is structural damage (chassis etc), Cat N is non-structural, meaning it's purely cosmetic so no safety compromises. The trouble with a previous cat D on the old system is that you have no way of knowing whether there was...

New or Part Worn Tyres & where from? Also Wheel Tracking?

£60 is about the going rate for proper 4wheel, I pay £50 mates rates for Hunter alignment. It's worth it if your rear tyres are wearing quickly. Do you have a Formula One Autocentres nearby? They're usually cheapest for fully fitted tyres, have good online discounts and price match if you...

I have an audi a3 2004 8p change the radio to an audi navigation sytem

I don't know how some people see out of their windscreens, huge ornaments hanging from the mirror, a massive dashcam with loose wiring on the drivers side, a sat nav with loose wiring in the middle of the screen, a phone cradle on the right hand side...

I have an audi a3 2004 8p change the radio to an audi navigation sytem

I bought a new TomTom a couple of years ago and have been really disappointed. It replaced my 2009 model but I can't say it's any better! It's very slow and takes ages to wake up, where the RNSE seems to be working within seconds of starting the engine. RNSE uses TMC traffic, my TomTom was...

    2004 Reg Plate LED Replacement

So, after all this... The replacements didn't arrive in time. However, the tester closed the tailgate after checking the spare wheel and the plate light started working, and has done ever since! I must have closed the tailgate 10+ times myself beforehand so no idea how that happened lol...

I have an audi a3 2004 8p change the radio to an audi navigation sytem

Do you require any extra sensors or aerials or is that all built into the nav unit? I've got RNSE in my A3 and found it to be so much more useful than the standalone TomTom I'd previously used. Looking at fitting OE nav to my other car now lol...

    Air con help

The outer ring of the compressor pulley will spin constantly, but the centre part should only spin when the clutch engages with the AC switched on. Mine definitely makes a noticeable click and difference in engine note when switching the AC on.

    Air con help

Yeah it's a single fan on those, with the other side of the rad cowling having a plastic shutter. Sensor on the block should bring the fans on. The rad one probably does as well but I've not tried.

    Air con help

The coolant fan should be running with the AC on, AC won't be effective without it, single fan is fine these days though. You can test the fan by unplugging the coolant temp sensor, it should default to fan on constant.

Auto Start / Stop button locks steering turns off power steering

It's the same with other stop start cars as well, my Focus does the same, shuts off the PAS when the engine stops. That's a manual though so I just keep the clutch in at quick junctions...not sure I'd like stop start on an auto!

    2004 Reg Plate LED Replacement

Ah, very interesting! I've had a similar experience...I previously had a Mk2 Focus for over 3 years which was great after 'fixing' initial DPF issues. But the Mk3 is awful tbh, I've got problems with pretty much every part of the car...they just seem to be so poorly built these days. Mines a...

Why the change from the ST3 out of interest? :)

    2004 Reg Plate LED Replacement

I didn't fit them lol. But they do look a bit 'cleaner' tbf, a lot of modern cars use them as standard. Plus they're more efficient and should last longer (OE ones, not the Chinese ebay rubbish lol). But what annoys me is when they put them on cars with halogen headlights. I also drive a Mk3...

    2004 Reg Plate LED Replacement

Because it's a single unit fitted by a previous owner. If it had bulbs I would've swapped back to an original.

    2004 Reg Plate LED Replacement

Morning, Doing checks ready for MOT on Monday and notice I have a reg plate light out. It's a 'solid' LED type, no bulb, and works if I push on it so obviously a loose connection somewhere. I've tried bending the pins on the back but it lasts a few seconds before failing again. Can anyone...
