Hi there,

I've had the timing belt changed in my '52 225bhp S3 at 40k miles / 4 years.

The car is now 8 years olf and about to hit 80k miles. It's currently in an Audi dealer for a service and they are saying that I need to get the timing belt done again. I looked over the service manual before giving them the car and it didn't suggest I needed it done ?

Should I be getting it done again ? They are suggesting £350 to do it.

Thanks,
Roy.

The cambelt should be done at 60,000 miles/5 years, if yours is now at 80,000 miles and its not yet been done then I would definately absolutely positively get it done within the next 12-18 months/20000 miles £350 is a good price as it is a ball aching job to do. When you get it done, get them to replace the water pump and tensioner at the same time as there are known issue areas and much much better to do them at the same time as the cam belt rather than at a later date. If the belt snaps, and they do it will cost you a Klondike to put right so much better to change it early rather than too late.

Hope this helps

Nige

they'll be quoting just for cambelt and then will sting you for water pump and tensioners on top.

a good indy should do that all in for £300ish or even slightly less (got mine done for £275). not sure why you'd take an 8 year old car to a dealership for servicing.

The cambelt was changed at 40k miles originally. They are now saying that it should be changed for a second time at 80k miles.

The £350 was their first quote for this. I'd be expecting to get the water pump changed and the cambelt for closer to £300 all in.

I've been taking the car to Glasgow Audi since new, they have been remarkably competitive on pricing for servicing, you just need to speak to the right person and be polite. I'm more than happy to pay £10-20 quid more to be able to say my car is 8 years old with FASH for when I get round to selling it next year.

With a 10,000 mile service for £99 and a major service for £250 (was £199 until recently) Cambelt for £349 (was £329) and a free MOT its not a bad deal and you have the FASH for when you sell it on. Now before everyone jumps up and down and says Audi dealers are crap it does depend on how good or bad your local dealer is, personaly I've always found mine helpful and knowledgeable, and if you have work done it's covered by Audi warranty for parts and labour which you may not always get with a local non francised garage. The key thing here is IF you have a good local dealer thers no reason to not use them, similarly if you have good local specialist then I'd also say use them in preference to any old back street lockup garage.

Ye, this is how I've found Glasgow Audi. Always professional, they do a collect and deliver service to my front door, or the office depending where I am that day. Prices are perhaps a tad higher, but for the easy of using them, convenience, FASH, worth the small premium. And, it is only a small premium, provided you just make sure you question what the pricing is going to be like.

Midland vw did my cambelt w/pump and tensioner for under £250 a couple years back. i would trust jody over wolverhampton audi any day :icon_thumright:

I had mine done at Midland VW as well, charged £270 for cambelt and waterpump.

so £99 for an oil and filter! £250 for a £130 service (presume that's not including plugs) and does that £349 for cambelt include waterpump and tensioners? price difference for 8-10 year old car with FASH vs one with FSH = zilch. Financially i just can't understand the decisions. None of my local dealers have ever been remotely competitive as compared to good indy's who i trust implicitly with my car.

If however you trust them with your car and there's no viable alternative locally then i understand it fully. Gotta look after the baby!

Well actually it did include spark plugs, along with air filter, oil filter. oil, sump plug. I also had a courtesy car for the day (A3 cabriolet) which when you work for yourself is a necessity I dont thin £199 was a bad deal, (Its £250 now but thats still not bad) and looking at the list of items on the check list its more than just an oil and filter change on both the 10 & 20k services. Cars in on the 4th May for the £99 10K service.
