I'm finding it hard to believe that the earthing strip could cause the haldex unit to stop working but it obviously did for mhr1972! Maybe your haldex unit is working intermitantly. The difference between it working and not is like night and day.

True just looks sweet under there and my DV gets so ****** hot. Thought the colder more condense air recirculating back into the turbo would help by keeping the turbo a tad cooler especially as I have a very heavy foot. Plus that pipe which will be blanked off has split 3 times on me whilst being heavy footed.
 
Well i cant make my mind up, sometimes it feels like it does work and others im not too sure, like today i went over some stell slip drains an speed (ish) while going round a corner and the car didnt grip, it kind of hopped if you get me, it like slipped, would this happen if quattro was working? Its just it happens so quick is their even time for the haldex to respond because our cars are fwd most of the time so.
 
MAte I still get the odd bit of slipping and sliding but thats when the haldex should transfer the power about to steady the ship.


If I put my foot down when setting off and don't get it right I either get bogged down where the esp light flashes on dash then the power comes or I wheel spin for a second or two then it feels like the car has been pushed then I take off??
Or I wheel spin then it feels like i been bogged down (delay in power transfer) then i set off properly.

Is this norm?

I know they run front wheel drive then when the Haldex kicks in they run 70-30 ratio

I only turn the esp off if I want abit of fun. Works perfectly fine in the snow and ice, the idea is not to lose traction in the first place.

quattro is for straight line grip or traction for a better term, it doesn't really help lateral/cornering grip. Any car will slide/slip going round an icy/snowed up bend, if you are going too fast!
 
To confirm. No doubt it was the earthing strap. Car is totally different. No wheel spin. Just digs in. My car just span its front wheels before if i loaded up with anything but gentle boost in the wet and was useless in the snow. Its now just ice around Colchester and she seems to just pull through. The earthing strap is very visible and sits on nearside connects rear diff to body. I thought this was going to be expensive. Further this strap had been missed by its service, possible more than once.
 
The haldex unit has an electrical pump for the hydraulics. A haldex clutch is hydraulicly operated and the pump (one would assume) uses a lot of juice. An earthing strap is a perfectly plausible weak point IMO.

Surely it does help though on a dry or wet corner though as if traction isnt good enough all 4 wheels are spinning to keep grip.

But on black ice and just completely iced over roads like my gfs was this morning no cars got a chance. a land rover was stuck amongst all the fwd cars too!.
 
To add to this, the diff and haldex etc are all mounted on anti vibration rubbers, so a simple open circuit could cause it not to work. I would however have expected it to throw a non communication code on the haldex system which should have been picked up on service.

The thing thats annyoing me is, my car doesnt spin in the dry or wet no matter what, raced a new s3 and my bosses s5 yesterday and i hit a bend at 60mph and the car never flinched, just griped the road like a hooker to a £20 but going up my street today, wash about 1-2inch of snow and slush and a bit of ice, put my foot down and got the car to spin, couldnt fuigure if it was the front or all 4!
 
Any car no matter whether 4wd or 2wd will spin on snow or ice if you put your foot down, it's not designed like that, if your driving on snow or ice you want to be gentle and smooth on the throttle, much better to have the 4wd than not as the extra traction should help with hills and pulling away in general.
