hi guys, my s3 seems to be pretty sluggish. ive heard roumers about the maf sensor? i dont no if it has ever been changed. can any1 help me with what to do? do i need to buy the whole new maf meter? or the plug that goes into it or what? sorry im not very technical minded with cars. also could there be any other reasons why it doesnt feel quick, for instance i had a small rip with a fiesta st - standard. and it seemed pretty even:crying: shouldnt a s3 beat that?

thanks

MAF sensor can be replaced as a whole or the sensor element in your existing housing (if) you have the security bit to unscrew it

If you disconnect your maf electrically and it feels stronger then its confirmed MAF is weak

but wouldnt disconnecting it make the engine light come on, on the dash??

Even if it does it's not going to hurt, your only going tobe driving it for a short period of time to see if the MAF is at fault.

but will the light go back out when i plug it back in? i dont want the engine management light to stay on

You wont get the engine management light, im sure it's the treaction control light, but yes once you plug the MAF back i the light will go off.

your sig says de-restricted maf? where i can get one of these?

You do it yourself, you take the plastic and metal meshing off the MAF housing.

just disconnected it... oh dear its like a differnt car... u can feel the turbo kick in now. so what do i need to replace and how much roughly will it cost?

Glad you've found the fault.

Are they around £100 from a dealer?

Wouldn't 'derestricting' the MAF be abit dangerous should a foreign object get passed? My M3 once started running rough and that was because a piece of paper had found its way onto the mesh and caused the resistor to go. God knows how it got there but the mesh stopped it going any further!

going to have to fork out £100 then i guess. the differnce really is incredible

where abouts in sussex are you?? you will need a whole new MAF there about £90 from audi get the exchange item though as there around £250 brand new, im in east sussex and also have vag.com if you need the codes clearing and to make sure everything is tickity-boomb

so do i change the maf meter? or the sensor or what? im slightly confussed.

so if i went into audi in eastbourne they will say £90? im from burgess hill, but i got to college in eastbourne and moving over that way, where abouts are u mate?

the MAF is after the air filter so for any forign objects to get to it it would have to be in the intake already, the mesh is there to stop air passing back past the elements in the sensor so as to not damage it as there delicate items, i derestricted mine when it was on stage1 and made it spool up better but since having stage2 it makes no difference so have gone back to meshed to save the MAF

so how would the mesh being there save the MAF? ill de-restrict the new 1 when i get it. so where abouts are u from kev? and chance you could go over it and make sure everything is tickity boom :D

yeah you will need the whole MAF unit the part that screws to the air filter housing and then conects to the rubber intake pipe (TIP) it will be around £90 mine was but im trade so it might be around £100

De-meshing the MAF does not kill the MAF, how the hell can it, all your doing is allowing more air to flow.

what othere problems can a maf make can it make the tickover lumpy some times and a bit smokey

can definantly make it run lumpy on tickover when on cold start, smokey possibly if its making it run rich

Just bought a genuine MAF from TPS worked out at about £75 exchange.
Don't buy an aftermarket one. I bought one from GSF a couple of years ago for my mk4 Anniversary & it was dreadful, they exchanged it & that was even worse. Got a genuine one from VW & that was fine.
It's ok to run without the MAF plugged in as the ECU reverts to default settings.
It wont put the engine malfunction light on, but it will store a code in the ECU.
