I own a RS3 Sportback (8V) Pre-facelift 2016 with Dynamic Pack (sport exhaust and Audi Magnetic Ride with RS Sports suspension).

I am getting a sort of, harmonic sound with a slight pulsating noise coming from the car. It starts off fairly quiet at 35MPH then increases in volume to 50MPH. Then quietens down to nothing at 70MPH.

If I hold the car at 50MPH on a flat road it can be heard. If I am going slightly down hill and lift off the gas completely, the sound stops.

It does not appear to be engine related. If I shift in to manual and drop a gear at a constant 50MPH the sound remains.

I normally have the Drive Select set to Auto. Oddly, I have noticed that if, change it to Comfort the sound volume drops but is still there.

I have jacked up each corner and checked for play in the wheel bearings, but they seem rock solid.

Back in November I had a fault code on the Haldex oil pump. The garage attempted to clean out the filter, but it was dead. So it was replaced in December.

At a recent MOT. I had two advisory notes. One was the rear bottom suspension mounts were badly corroded. The other noted that the front offside tyre was wearing on its inside edge.

Question is, does any one have any ideas as to the source of the noise?

Could the failed Haldex oil pump damaged the Haldex system in some way?

In Comfort mode does the car use the rear wheels? Could it be a problem with the rear diff?

Only other thought I have had is the drive shaft bearing. I would have though the shaft would be spinning all the time. So why does the noise almost vanish when I lift off the gas at 50MPH.

It’s difficult to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. I think it is coming from the back somewhere. A friend recently thought it was coming from the front (in fact the in the direction of the front offside).

I the noise may have started around the time I had a new set of tyres fitted to the front. I am not 100% sure though.

I did do a search of the Audi forums, but the only other post I saw with something similar never got an answer. :(

Thanks.

Thanks.

I take it you’ve investigated why the front tyre is wearing on an inside edge ?

It must be worn badly for the mot guy to mention it.

It is booked in. I am getting the alignment/tracking looked at tomorrow. Given the state of the roads in the UK I suspect it has had a whack from a pothole. :(

Right. So both rear springs and bottom mounts were replaced (originally due to corrosion, but it turned out one was cracked too!)

Wheel alignment rear toe was -0 deg 15' & -0 deg 11' (limit is 0 deg 05' +/- 0 deg 05'). Total -0 deg 26' deg (limit 0 deg 10' +/- 0 deg 10').

Front left was -0 deg 02' (limit is 0 deg 05' +/- 0 deg 05').

They are all in tolerance now. But the harmonic noise remains. Back to the drawing board.

Difficult to diagnose when the car isn’t in front of us I’m afraid.

Best to get it into a decent Audi specialist rather than taking guesses at it.
