Evening chaps,
Hope you're all well.

So it would appear that my old bus has been struck down with the dreaded driveshaft vibration gremlins.
To be honest it doesn't really surprise me as the Quattro do seem afflicted by the problem more than 2wd buses, not sure why but maybe its life with a Quattro..lol

I've been noticing vibrations for a while, started very minimal but now very noticeable indeed.
I've ruled out wheel balancing and out of true wheels etc, i did briefly think maybe the DMF was starting to break up but the clutch operation is very good with no abnormal noises as such.

I do need new engine mounts but it's only when driving and predominantly under acceleration so doubtfully the mounts are to blame, so pretty well drops things into the driveshaft/CV joint park.
Thinking about it more the problem may well stem from the driveshaft disconnection episode back in the summer, the shaft/ cv joint may have suffered more damage than was visible and has led to the slow failing of the parts.

So I think best to just by a new pair of complete shafts assemblies now rather than mess about with replacing joints and possibly sill having issues with the old shaft.

The big question is what replacement to use, there are quite a few brands on the market, not going with OE Audi parts unless really needed.

Any suggestions on suitable replacement brands that are not made of chocolate ..lol

All feedback gratefully received.

A bit further on with this.
I'm looking at ordering a pair but they are listed as specific L & R fitments with differing part numbers and cannot be interchanged.
Can anyone enlighten me on what the difference actually is and why they can't be used either way round as they look identical .

cheers
rob

I had this issue and like yourself, didn't want to fork out on the expensive Audi OE ones.

I did some research and decided to order some SKF ones. I believe the OE ones are made by GKN but SKF are well known for bearings and driveshafts.

I actually got a great deal on two SKF driveshafts from Autodoc - it actually worked out to be the same price as buying just CV joints.

I've had them on for about six months and highly recommend them. Great quality, no issues and looked identical to OEM.

If you are looking to order from Euro Car Parts and GSF I noticed that they were sided too. They also stated different lengths. However when I took the old ones out I noticed both part numbers were the same. So I ordered two identicals from Autodoc that were the equivalent to that part number. No issues for me.

I have seen the SKF ones, and probably the way to go.
The L & R are different part numbers on my Quattro so I'll just order one of each, still cant find an answer to why they are different though.

I'm sure you won't regret going with the SKF ones. I'm happy with them. My specialist VAG indy told me to go for them as he fits them all day long and never had issues.

Out of interest what's the Audi P/Ns that correlate to your car?

A few local garages have said just replace the joints but i think i prefer 100% new complete assemblies just in case .

Might answer your question but I've noticed on quattro's (mine is FWD 2.0TFSI) the length on the left and right are different.
8E0 407 272AR (R)
8E0 407 271AR (L)

So L is 594mm and R is 615mm in length. Other than this they seem identical.

Yes I think its false economy as the inner and outer joints are probably evenly worn, so the other probably won't be far off. I only had one inner joint go but I just replaced both sides and complete for piece of mind.

I'm going to go out later , in the rain to check what shaft is on the L , they are allegedly not interchangeable but I have a horrible feeling that they may well be...lol

so just had a snoop and they are the right way on L shaft ends in 1AR and R ends 2AR , I was starting to think I had them on the wrong way round..lol
