Hi Everyone

I am new to this forum and have a A3 2.0 TDI DSG sportback with the BKD engine, it was running fine but has stood for about 8 weeks, today I tried to start it and it cranks over but will not fire and I am worried as while cranking the Oil pressure warning can comes up on the dash.

I have checked the oil level and it is in between the Low and Full marks

I have searched the forum to try and find the location of the oil pressure sensor and thread size so I can try to connect a pressure gauge as I have experienced a faulty oil pressure sender previously on a Nissan, I don't know if the oil pressure sensor would somehow prevent the car from starting

Any help would be much appreciated

Connect with VCDS and prime the fuel system 3-5 times.

Then connect another car with jump leads to give you a lot more juice and crank for 10 second intervals eventually it’ll go

Very common behaviour for such vehicles being stood for so long including getting low oil pressure warning

Thank you for your reply, please excuse my ignorance but what is VCDS and how would I connect it ?

Also are you saying that the low oil pressure warning is inaccurate as normal or does the sending unit require replacement

Thanks again for your help, itis much appreciated

Oil pressure is the oil pump inside the engine not the “Fuel” sender.

like I said if you crank the car for more than 10-15 seconds and it is NOT starting the engine will say low oil pressure

Since you don’t have VCDS, lock the car open the door and put the key in and turn the ignition on it will turn the fuel sender on for 30 seconds and start to fill up the front fuel filter.

lock the car wait a minute and repeat this 5 times, each time you will hear the fuel sender pump working for 30 seconds

With car battery fully recharged and another car connected via jump leads attempt to start it again for 10 -15 seconds

Thank you for the reply, I now understand what you mean with regard to the low oil pressure warning on the dash, it will come on anytime that you turn the engine over for more than 10 seconds if it does not start, so that is one worry out of the way I will try this procedure tomorrow and let you know the result, your advice is much appreciated.

Great you may have to do this several times, had to do it about 6-7 times after short internals on a BKD stood for a month.

which is why you need the battery first fully charged and also another vehicle connected with jump leads

Hi

I followed your instructions to the letter and hey presto it lives, a little reluctant and it took at least half a dozen attempts (I lost count) its a bit smoky but running ok I have left it idling and it has come up to temperature and have only just turned it off to come and post.

You certainly know your BKD engines, I am well chuffed if it starts again tomorrow I will be even more impressed.

Thank you very much for your clear detailed advice

Best Regards

Great news, there was no fuel in the system between the fuel injectors —> tandem pump —-> front fuel filter housing since it was stood for so long.

It’ll be fine

Get it up to temperature and then take it for a good blast with plenty of driving at High revs and that’ll soon clear it out

Hi this is my first post on here but I found the info above worked perfectly for getting my farther in laws a3 started. I’m just wondering what the cause of the issue would be his mechanic says it could be the fuel pump?

It’s not a fault, just over time the fuel gets siphoned back to the main tank since it’s not started even once in some weeks so takes time to prime again.

glad to hear it worked!

Oil pressure is the oil pump inside the engine not the “Fuel” sender.

Just wanted to say thanks a lot for this - I managed to get my 2005 A3 going again after a long period of inactivity by following your instructions.
