Hi all,
My new (to me) B8.5 S4 is due an oil change shortly and I wondered what people recommend. It's currently got 5W-30 in, I know when I had the S3 where oil kept going down people recommended 5W-40. Not had mine long enough to see whether this happens on S4.
Any thoughts welcome.

5W-30 if stock and 5W-40 if tuned. Having said that basically the two oils will be the same viscosity when cold, so both good for getting oil around quickly.

W30 will be thinner when hot so, when pushing the engine and creating alot of heat the oil will degrade and loose protection whereas the W40 will stay thicker at the same heat.

Also, oil temps will go up quicker with thinner oils.

Also, 5W-40 helps with oil consumption as some B8.5s do report slightly higher than usual consumption but not as excessive as B8s.

So, in essence you can use Castrol / Quantum 5w-30/40 as both meet VW 502 / 503.1 / 504 spec.

Costco do Castrol Edge 5W-30 for about £30 a can. I'm told this is what Audi dealerships use for services so I've been doing that for the three I've maintained.

Viscosity doesn't determine film strength / protection / degrade .

If you have a 30 and 40 grade of exactly the same quality level then yes 40 is stronger .

You can have a 'stronger' 30 though as to it's ingredients of higher group oil real synthetic basestocks PAO and Esters .

Thanks, will have a think about it. I've still got 3 litres of Catrol Edge Titanium 5W-30 I used on the S3 so could pick up another can of 4 litres for around £30 at Costco which would work for the next change.

My car is stock and I don't push it (too) hard.

I've always found that Mobil One ESP 5W-30 works for me in my cars, maybe overkill for my wife's 2015 Polo 1.2TSI but if I buy 10 litres from Opie Oils once a year, I get that at a good price and free postage and 6litres + 4litres = 10litres, so all good.

Castrol used to be a very good lubricant company, but I think that it is like many businesses being forced to cut back and live on its name - and buyers of their products are buying an "okay" engine oil product for "premium" prices.

For some reason I prefer buying Esso fuel, and coincidently Mobil is part of that same group - but that did not colour my decision to move to Mobil One for engine oil. I think that I moved from VW Group's Quantum offering when I discovered that you could get a same or better directly from Fuchs, so moved to them when Quantum Gold was discontinued and then moved away from Fuchs when SuperSyn was discontinued and Fuchs seemed to have become trickier to source locally, so moved onto only buying online and from Opie Oils and Mobil One ESP 5W-30.

What Audi or any other main dealership will use in their workshops changes with who ever their motoring group have got the best (cheapest) supply deal with, and within that probably some regional differences. My S4 was refilled with a Mobil 5W-30 product at its first service at its supplying dealership, followed by a Shell 0W-?? by my local Audi dealership at its second service, it came with variable servicing so left it on that while under warranty, and replaced the oil myself at the "inbetween" yearly periods.

No need to use -40 unless there is an oil consumption problem, in which case it should also be investigated, starting with PCV.

Costco are having the Castrol Edge Titanium 5W-30 LongLife on offer 3-23 August @ £19.18 (£8 off before VAT) for 4 litres :D

I stocked up the last time they ran it. Can't pass up a price like that :icon thumright:

My oil service is due end of August so this comes just in time for me! I've got 3 litres left over so another can of 4 should do the trick :)

I’ve an A4 Avant 2015 Ultra SE Technik that is telling me it needs a litre of oil. Should I be chucking in some 5w30?
