Test drove a X3 M40i yesterday

I’m sorry, that is a terrible deal. Paying £4750 upfront, then £564 a month for the privilege of just 8000 miles a year, no thanks.

You have to compare it to other PCP deals, all PCP is expensive. But when you can get a brand new M4 for a similar price to an S3 it makes the deal great. Monthly payments are all subjective some are happy to pay more.

That really is a cracking deal, although the GFV is truly shocking. I suppose this just sums up the high level of discounts resulting in bad residuals.

What you get with one hand, you take away with the other......!

No doubt the car is a belter but i just couldn't pay more for a car than my mortgage.

True. But I think the second hand trade-in values of most cars are shocking these days. Everything seems more expensive than ever to buy, but worth peanuts when you come to sell. I do think PCP deals are the problem. If you're selling a second hand S3 for £20,000. Someone either has to have the cash, or usually get bank loan.

Yet walk into an Audi dealership, and you'll be able to drive off in a brand spanking new car for the same monthlies as the bank loan on a second hand car.

Whatever I decide to buy, I'll take the PCP deal to get the discounts, then just pay it off straight away. Works out cheaper in the long run. But I'll still get hit when I come to sell it.

BMW servicing costs are horrendous. If you thought Audi were bad, they will certainly change your opinion.

I’ve been trying to sort out a first service for a friend this week on 19 plate 320d M sport, and nothing below £332. Thinking this was a regional thing, I phoned a few dealers across the country and got the same price as it appears it’s fixed from BMW. £332 to change the oil filter, oil and micro filter???? I was gobsmacked to say the least.

When questioned about their price match promise “yes of course sir, we will price match another garage BUT only another BMW dealer. We don’t price match independent garages” so effectively the other dealer will quote you the same fixed price, so you don’t get any discount. At least with Audi you can get more reasonable costs via their price match. If I supply my own oil the price still only drops to £262.

I found their prices outrageous and when asked to justify why such a premium got the usual bull about the oil being “special BMW engineered oil” “BMW engineers filters”
( you know because BMW make those) “your car is a M sport” ( the poor bookings lady still believed the M sport had a different engine compared to a normal 2.0 diesel)

£300 is more like what Audi would quoted you to service a RS4 or alike.

BMW..Audi...I'm sure Merc too are all similar price. My local Audi wanted £430 for my S5s first service and a local indy done it for £150.

Regardless of the badge, they're perceived premium so will have an associated premium cost come servicing time from a main dealer.

No, not yet. Just getting some prices for the X3 M40i this week. Been in a dilemma really. Have kept an eye on the Porsche site, and been waiting for my ideal 991 Carrera T spec to come in. It just has.

Guards Red, sports seats, no rear seats, 1 owner and 4500 miles. It's a lot of money though. Once deposit paid, it's only around £325-£350 a month for 3 years via PCP. But it's £30,000 deposit, and after 3 years i'll still owe over half the car. So either pay off the Balloon and keep it, or trade it in (no doubt with having to add to the deposit) and get a 992.

But then it's how often will I use it? Lot of money to be sat in the garage unused for weeks at a time. Self employed so work lots of weekends.

Sensible choice is the X3 M40i. Will do everything I need it to do. Heart says 911, and either keep my late fathers Tuscon, or trade that in an get a Fiesta ST as the everyday car. But that's stupidly expensive.

Totally understand your dilemma. Porsche does sound nice if the figures stacked up for you. The thing that swung it for me, (apart from the fact I preferred the M40i by a margin) for the cars I was looking at was the massive discount I was offered and the 2.9% finance tbh

I wish I'd known about the deals earlier on. The 2.9% is on cars delivered before the end of the year. So I'd have to take whatever was in stock, and not my ideal spec.

Need to speak to both Porsche & BMW dealers before the end of the year, to decide what to do. Good spec 911's don't hang around very long.

My neighbour has recently taken delivery of a stock X3m, picked the best colour available to him then decided he didn’t like it! Went to look at getting roof wrapped and ended up getting whole car done!
@Audi Bairn have a look at TLC Detailing on fb or instagram, they have an M40i in grey with before and after detailing shots looks really good!

True. Don’t get me wrong I’d expect to pay some premium at a main dealer, but these prices are horrendous. They wanted £140 just for the oil, but if you supply your own it only knocks off £60 lol. £450 for a first service? Did they include a free fuel for a week too? Astonishing. Independents are the way to go, and at least you don’t get a 15 year old working on your car.

As people have already said the price of cars in general are horrendous, and residuals value very poor.

I recall when the E46 came out one of my relatives bought a M3 convertible (build to order) fully speced for £48k, and sold it 2 years later for 38k. Today an equivalent M4 will set you back 65-70k, but only be worth around 35-40k after 2 years. Seems like they pull your pants down from the initial purchase, all the way through to maintenance and selling.

Nice cars, and a nice problem to have! Let us know which route you decide to go down. Out of curiosity, what is the APR % on Porsche used? Always looked on their website dreaming of which weekend car I'd buy, but noticed they make you contact the centre for a quote.

When I was looking at a GT4 in June, they were quoting 7.7% and after a few phone calls, it came down to around 7%. But still too high for me. Needs to be around 5% to make any deal happen.

It’s maybe not what you want to hear at this stage but I only ordered mine (after the first one was cancelled at another dealership) last Sunday and they had various cars available nationally. There appear to be very few M40i’s that come without all three of the main packages already specced too. Also mine isn’t coming until January so they appear to be ignoring the “delivered before 31/12/19” bit as far as qualifying for the deal goes.

I like that, nice job. I know of TLC if that’s the one between Stirling and Tullibody. Not looked at their website for a while so will check it out again. A mates mate owns Mint Car Care at Newbridge but never been.
Edit: can’t find the M40i bit mate?

There will be “deals” in the new year, which is only a week or so away (maybe not with Porsche tho )

Have been talking to my local dealer Sales Manager potentially about a 1 series for missus. He confirmed 1 series will be part of new year deals which is likely to involve bigger contribution and/or lower rate. We are in no rush to get rid of JCW, but due to her left foot a auto is needed ideally.

I'd be seriously tempted by the new 3 series touring in 330e form. Think the new 3 series is a cracking looking car, and like the sound of what the 330e gives....thinking about getting one in January for a 24hr test drive. Better discounts and a 2.9% APR deal would have me signed up!

Would consider that too if there is a good lease deal to be had in the next few months. My 225xe goes back in June, it’s done 8k Miles in a year and stats are looking good.

Was in Lloyd Colne BMW yesterday with the Mrs 1er.

A new shape M Sport 1 series is £569 deposit and £359 per month.

only extras on that was paint and ‘guard x’ (whatever that is).

Around £550-£600 pa saved on petrol based on these figures.
Only takes £35 to fill the tank where as the S3 must have been around £65 on 99 Ron.
Electricity at home has gone up around £18pm

In all honesty, it seems a 2.0tdi would work out roughly the same when you factor in all costs. I like the idea of a hybrid, but not sure if it would be the right buy. I suppose a testdrive will answer all my queries, and if its worth it.

Broadspeed are quoting 6 month deliveries on X3 M40i's.

Apparently dealers are quoting 3 months. You then get a letter a month later stating delay of 3 months. Not sure I'm happy about waiting 6 months. Will have changed my mind by then no doubt.

Yeah, I'm looking at them now. Seen one in good spec. Not my exact spec, but close enough. Registered Sept this year, and would save a chunk of money. Might drive down to see it tomorrow.

Would be similar but petrol will more than likely be smoother power delivery and I think we will see diesel being phased out.

With city’s like Bristol proposing diesel car bans I wouldn’t be surprised to see others follow.

Best way mate, the cash you save will be better spent elsewhere rather than the tax man’s pocket, since you lose the VAT straight away. If you’re not already have a look at BMW approved used website, as I’ve found they don’t list all the cars on autotrader so you can easily miss out.

Yeah 5 to 6 months for factory orders I think but there’s pre-built stock usually all fully specced and 2.9 percent finance for next three days

The issue with the used cars is the interest rates though, at 12% it makes no sense to buy used over new.
