I think I know the answer to this, however:
My PFL 8V 1.6TDi has recently started to take a little while longer than usual to start the engine on a cold day. So when I turn the key, the 'Engine starting' info doesn't pop up on the display as quick as it did a month or so ago.

Also, the stop/start doesn't function as often.

I know we are getting to colder weather but does this also show signs that the battery is on its way out? I'm not sure if it's the original or not. And when the battery does go, what sort of signs do I get that it's happening or does it one day simply fail?

Take it to get it tested, the likes of halfords do it for free. The stop/start will function less this time of year as its colder so cant rely on that.

My S3 needed a battery change at just over 3 years (before I bought it); my (December) 2010 Mini Countryman, on the other hand, is still on the original battery (AGM like the S3) but I'm replacing it now as it's starting to give messages about battery being low (despite charging overnight) so I think it's time to bite that bullet! 6 weeks shy of 9 years is pretty good going for a battery lol. I got a replacement from Euro Car Parts but found it cheaper on the RAC online shop, they're meant to be price matching it for me but I've been waiting a week now, if they don't refund the difference soon it's going back and I'll buy it from RAC
