Its with a heavy heart i say RIP to my baby, my 2013 2.0tdi S-line in daytona grey written off with only 37,000 miles on the clock.
The politest name to call the driver at fault is nothing short of an absolute idiot. Instead of slowing down to stop at a cross roads / give way junction he simply decided to not even slow down and T-Bone the car as i was driving down a main road. He hadn’t been drinking so can only assume he was either looking at his phone, arguing with Mrs or completely ignorant to rules of the road as he literally didn’t slow down to give way - he drove / cut straight across a main road. The dash cam shows this clearly thanks to the wide angle lense.
The main thing is that my partner wasn’t seriously hurt & that's all i care about. A millisecond earlier and she would of been hit square on the passenger side door. We’ve both hurt our backs, neck & shoulder but cars can be replaced.
The car hit exactly on the rear axle, pushing the whole axle over, snapping & bending various rear suspension & axle components, even the break disc shattered on opposite site which shows the force. Damage to rear 3/4 panel & door. The curtain airbags did their job protecting are heads from pinging off the windows. My partner had a little burn on her arm off her seat airbag deploying but again it did the job it was designed to do protecting her. To be honest due to the force of the impact i’m surprised the damage wasn’t a lot more than it looks from the outside. Although it hit square on wheel & axle side its testament to how solid our cars can be. I’m just thankful once again he didn't hit a millisecond earlier as it could have been a lot more serious if he hit passenger door instead of rear quarter & wheel.
I’ve loved every minute of owning my A3. I’ve looked after and pampered her from day one, doing my own DIY full service every year to keep her in tip top condition and running order. I knew it would be a total loss / write off, thankfully the inspection engineer seen how well it was looked after (it was immaculate inside & out) and gave me top book price so a small positive i guess.
I’ve got rather nice Mercedes C class as a courtesy car at the minute, nice inside with lots of toys but external looks aren't my cup of tea - making me wonder where to venture next once i get my payment through, do i look for another A3 or get something different for a change?...... There’s nothing that really appeals to me at the moment when i had a look around online - think i’m still in disbelief that I've lost my lovely A3!
