Can anyone get a VIN number from a reg plate?

I'm after some wiring diagrams for a B9 S4 on ErWin and a VIN number would help find the exact ones.

It's easy enough to get a reg plate of autotrader etc but it's not so easy to get hold of a VIN number.

Does anyone know how to get a VIN?
 
Oh, Joe Public can't get access to VIN anywhere, other than wandering around cark parks and reading it off a parked car.

Most/all people using a resource like Erwin will know the VIN of the car they need info for, so why don't you?
 
Because I have a B8 S4 and have bought seats from a B9 which I now need to figure out how to wire in to my car.

ErWin can be used by anybody who registers and pays Audi a fee for access.
