Hi, my son in law is looking for a new car and has looked at a 2007 A4 Avant 2.0 diesel 6 speed manual. He's keen on buying the car and has left a deposit but he tells me the car overall drives well, brakes, engine etc but first gear is difficult to engage when cold but gets better when its been driven. My first instinct is to walk away from the car but I just wondered if this could be an easy fix (selector mechanism ) or is it a sign of gearbox/syncro issue?
If anyone can help/ give some guidance on this I would appreciate it. He also tells me he doesn't think the aircon works either as the 'Econ' button stays on.
Thanks in advance, Paul

Hi had mine 2tdi for 5 years first gear sound like mine which I would say in normal as long as there's no crunch sound as for econ see pic I've attached from manual.
Hope it hleps

That's great, thanks for the information. I'll pass the information onto my son in law and he can make the decision.
I suppose if you buy a car and then the gear selection issue appears, you have no choice but to live with it or get it fixed if possible. Buying a car 'with' the issue is probably a different matter.
Thanks again for the information.
