Hi all ive now had my A4 for 5 months and i have one really enoying problem which spoils the driving experience a bit.

when coming down through the gears and the car changes from 3rd into 2nd the car seems to add a touch of extra braking to my already braking movement maybe 50% of the time which almost feels like the car changed down too early and i got excessive engine braking. which makes it sort of jerk forward.

Ive had it in to Audi last month for this and the Master Tech could not find any faults logged, the software was the latest and he took it for a drive and noticed the extra braking.

After some head scratching he phoned another M Tech in Germany who didnt know either and thought it might be down to the Mhev system kicking in about 12 mph and this being normal for the A4.

I wasnt sure and still think if it was the Mhev system it would do it all the time not randomly half the time.

So a month later its still doing it. what i need is all you 2.0 TFSI 190 ps S tronic owners out there is just to spare a minute or two and let me know if or not you have experienced this problem it is very noticeable you would not miss it if you had the problem. thanks all.

What MY? You say about MHEV is that the mild hybrid stuff?

Can’t say I noticed this on my MY17...

Mine does it too and like you, the most annoying thing is the lack of consistency. I'm pretty sure it's not related to the drive mode. I would say the rate of deceleration is a factor though; slowing down gently approaching lights/roundabout in busy traffic I notice this rarely, but approaching an empty junction from say 40 and maybe braking a bit harder more often will cause this inconsistent deceleration......feels just like an extra hard dab on the brake pedal.

I've always assumed it was the Mhev.

I don't have a mild hybrid (I didn't know there were A4's that were released with this already, I thought the mild hybrids were only with the new engine designations for the A4 and A6). However I do encounter this, so it is clearly not your mhev system. When approaching a set of traffic lights, if I leave it to roll up to the lights from say, a hundred yards, the extra braking comes in and I would probably come to a halt much earlier if I left it alone. I read somewhere else on this forum this same behaviour (can't remember the thread), and they suggested it was purposely simulating a manual gearbox, where you use the gears to break. That may or may not be what is happening but it does make sense.

Note that it only happens in "normal" drive mode, if I put it into sport it doesn't appear to happen. It's just one of those behaviours you learn to deal with, each model/car/gearbox have slightly characters in how they drive. Personally it doesn't bother me, a slight extra touch on the accelerator is all that is needed.

Totally normal. Although I drive the 2.0 diesel it has recuperation of energy. Turn you display to consumption. You’ll notice once it goes past Max here it’s charging your battery and know that it has activated. I marked it in the picture in red. I have a MY2016. I don’t have the mild hybrid but I notice the car feels like it’s applying extra braking. Because you have the mild hybrid it’s most likely more prominent.

This type of fuel saving and energy recuperation has been available on modern cars for many years. I would be interested to know if there is any difference in the indicators and displays with the new mild hybrid? Does it give any specific indication that the mild hybrid system is either being charged/discharged, or is it all invisible and simply used in the background?

I don’t have the mild hybrid as I said so others would have to comment. Also you might feel gearbox change down depending on how you drive the car. It has a learning period. It might downshift for you.

OP,
Same thing I've noticed on my 2.0 TFSI 190 ps S tronic (MY18). However it happens just occasionally/randomly and just when dropping down gears, slight jerk when it happens. It appears to be totally normal and I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just enjoy the car, cos its an absolute pleasure to drive :icon thumright:

Mild hybrid has been around for years but it is really only braking eletrical regeneration, or regenerative braking, that is perform with our cars. Really to use term 'mild hybrid', when my 2011 Focus had the same, is pushing it.

But the stronic is essentially a eletronically controlled manual gearbox so the gears will be changed down as anyone should do when driving a manual gearbox. I believe the manual does this to aid braking, as a driver would perform with a manual gearbox. It also has a downspeed speed control, not sure if this only applies to the A4 Allroad though..

Thanks for all your posts glad to know its a feature on the car rather than a fault with the gearbox. Yes the A4 is a great car and im enjoying the experience hoping to get the Dtuk tuning stuff at some point and have heard good things from posters on here about them. once again thanks for taking the time for your imput.

Pretty much the same deal with the battery marker. The virtual cockpit is class. What mode do you tend to drive in? I’ve settled on Auto now. Experiment and see what mode works for you. Also if you come to a junction and lightly come to a stop without putting too much pressure on the brake you can avoid the stop start kicking in. The brakes on these cars are something.

Yes the VC is a cool bit of kit same as you ive played with the drive settings and seem to stay on auto now.
