hi everyone,
Why does my rs3 saloon (with perf exhaust) just not sound anything like those on youtube. Im certainly not getting any snapcrackles...especially revving at standstill...just sounds like its blowing air, to the point I cant believe I have a perf exhaust (even valves open)... maybe im missing a trick here, im only at 2100 miles into ownership....
could do with your input before the psychological rot sets it...

If you are reving having only just turned it on (?) You need to scroll through modes back to dynamic.

done that, even after full day of driving so no warm up or closed valves issues there.
Sounds positively sub standard..

Try listening in a car park - I have around 15k now and it sounds amazing. I think it sounds better than any I have heard on youtube.

thats another issue you raise, does mine still require bedding in’. if so ive only got another 13000 miles to go compared to yours..
As im troubleshooting from a basic level, how can I physically check if I have a perf exhaust in the first place.
Just on the off chance theres been an almighty screw up from dealer.. Unlikely I know but Ive got to ask the question.

What colour are your exhaust tips? If they are black, then you have the sports exhaust, if they are chrome, you have the standard exhaust.

Wow that simple ain. Ive the black tips..

When you go into dynamic mode stationary from comfort, can you hear the click of the valves and the tone change?

Most cars on youtube are pre facelift... it makes a difference.

Yes, when going through modes, I can hear a difference.

ive not been comparing to the Pre FL cars on youtube.. eg check this vid for example... i get the 5cyl rumble although bit more muted but deffo not the snapcracks...mines nothing like that and the vid is a standard zaust..

The exhaust will get louder with more miles with carbon build up as those perforated sound baffles in the muffler fill up with soot.

That car has the sports exhaust, its got black tips. Mine sounds better than that actually its recently boing doing really nice crackles and pops in the colder weather. It does not do it much when its REALLY warm, thats the car pulling timing. The car only likes doing that when its not heat soaked by the way.

You not getting those little crackles at all?

What about when the car is warmed up and you turn it off and start it about 10 minutes later, do you get that little crackle on start up?

That has a sports exhaust, as long as you go into dynamic every time you start there is no reason at all why yours shouldn't sound exactly like that.

Mileage will sweeten it up but they pop and crackle from factory when revving at a standstill, nothing when driving... very rarely if you leave the gearbox in S mode to perform the early downshifts on its own.

This is my actual car, back when I fixed the exhaust rattle just showing valves open vs closed, not revving very high at all, but if you are not getting these light crackles, something is a bit off.

If it is just pops and crackles you want in neutral, you can induce these with some practice.

pops and crackles are from unburnt fuel that has gone through the engine without being detonated. So to start with you need a hot pipe and a lot of unburnt fuel, the hotter the better. Then rev the engine up as high as you can and as the revs die back blip the throttle quickly which will send a shot of fuel through the engine to be detonated in the exhaust.

The trick is to learn when exactly to blip the throttle and for how long. Decatting the pipe will help.

100% sounds better with some more km/miles. When i first got mine, it was a bit sedate, after a few thousand kms it really started to pop and crackle more. It then went in for an exhaust change for the rattles, sounded sedate again (because new exhaust). After a few thousand again, its sounding sweet.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Also chatted to Audi tech today, it seems the overall consensus is the working in period requires a good few thousand miles as many here have suggested. Oh well, time to put some milage behind me I guess.
Im hoping to put up a vid of the working exhaust so you can hear were im coming from.

Your car WILL pop and crackle regardless of mileage, it’s just how good it sounds that will develop but not that noticeably I don’t think.

No, the RS3 2018 remains the same as the 2017. From 2019 the RS3 will receive the OPF exhaust.

Yep so 2019 RS3 will be more akin to a Dyson

What about the exhausts that fix the exhaust rattle? Maybe they updated the factory ones for that issue?

Yep, as simple as that.
Were you not aware of this prior to ordering your RS3?

There's plenty of them out there. Just search Autotrader or Audi used cars, they're usually the cheaper ones. For example: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201804245879593?

I really wonder where the biggest difference is, why the sport exhaust sounds louder.

The resonators are half the size, can’t comment on the insides.. PCW might be able to comment on it more having opened them up.
