I had a strange noise from my car today (A3 TDI), sounds like a kind of turning scraping noise, starts when you turn the key, before the engine even starts and continues for a few seconds after you switch off, which made me think not the engine as such. So I narrowed it down to the EGR valve area, did a Google search and came up with the anti shudder valve, see here; https://mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/31841/buzzing-sound-coming-from-audi-a3-2-0-tdi-engine
So it's the bit between the manifold and EGR and on E.Bay etc they seem to refer to them more as "Throttle bodies".
If I disconnect the electric plug, turn the key, it's silent but then presumably it isn't working, which makes sense. What I am trying to work out is, what part exactly is knackered? Is it the whole EGR/ASV or just the ASV. If you think about it, for all the electrics plug to the ASV, for all I know they could be turning something in the EGR and that's where the noise is coming from.
Just trying to narrow it down before I go and buy an ASV, change it to find it makes no difference, appreciate any advice anyone can offer, cheers :)

I can't imagine it being the EGR itself, on its own. no fault codes?

On a BKD engine, the EGR is vacuum controlled, so no electrics to worry about. You are right that there is an electrical plug going to the ASV, which is solely to control the ASV. Usually, if the ASV was faulty, you would have an engine management light come up. Once scanned it would tell you it is the throttle body. I had to change my one because of this. The typical fault with these is the throttle body is either jammed open or jammed shut. If jammed shut, the engine won't even start. If jammed open, the engine will run as normal, but may be a little more rough as you shut down the engine (not by much really). I would say that if the car drives fine and has no warning light, then don't bother changing the ASV just yet.

How much did you pay for a new throttle body & where from?
My engine management light came on today,no early signs of a problem but a scan shows it to be throttle related.

ASV is £100 eBay and takes 15 min to fit.

Had a BKD Gold, which had ASV fault codes on VCDS which did not trigger a EML.

I can't remember how much it was exactly, but it was £100+. I went for a Pierburg one as this is the original manufacturer who supplies VW AUDI. You can get them from Euro Car Parts.

I have ordered a Pierburg one up, should come at the beginning of the week. The noise is still there, no worse but I think I will change it anyway before it becomes any more of an issue. Must admit I am wondering what makes the noise before the engine starts and after it turns off, what can it be doing? Also wondered if it needs coding to the car like a throttle body, can anyone remember?
The terminology is confusing, they seemed to be ASVs on 1.9 TDIs, some of which incidentally seem to have the same valve. Lots of people call them Throttle bodies, which is really petrol engine terminology, "Throttle/Air control flap" seems more acurate.I think some breakers haven't worked out it's not just part of the EGR. I looked at numerous videos, one Vag-com one tells you all about throttle bodies, different types, different ways to code them, then in the last bit says if you have a Diesel you won't have a TB and so you don't need to know all this information you have just tried to make sense of, it's all good innocent fun though :)

It won't need coding, so you can just fit it and go. Yeah I prefer to call them anti-shudder valves.

Thanks for the information, that certainly make things easier :)
Yeah, there was nothing wrong with anti-shudder, now it's just confusing. It arrived today, 4 days early, so just need to get a bit of time and I will get it on. It's actually not sounding much worse but I don't want to cause any other problems so in the mood to get the job done, weather forecast up here (Scotland) is poor though so that may delay my enthusiasm.

Good news, I ran a can yesterday and there were a couple of codes for flaps not working. I didn't think it would actually have been bad enough to have thrown codes but there you go! So thereafter cancelled the codes and swapped out the valve. I took the opportunity to remove the EGR as well and gave that a good clean. None were that bad I have to say, so not inclined to follow up with a manifold clean anytime soon. There could be 2 reasons for this, in may last ownership of a TDI Golf I learnt that spirited driving is a good thing for TDIs, due to a coked up turbo and I do believe in using a thing, without abusing it too much so the A3 gets regular blasts. Also knowing a bit as I said about TDI woes I bought the Seat EGR delete part, the one that doesn't completely block it and still allows exhaust gasses through, hence the engine doesn't think there's a fault. So car now back and running, no major issues, or at least none that I know of yet so looking good. Thanks again for all your advice.
I should say I never timed myself but then I did do a bit more than just change the valve but "15 mins?" I would suggest that's Master Tech territory :)
Another thing, I stripped the valve today and found 2 missing teeth in the smaller plastic wheel, so that was definitely the issue. When I was looking around for parts, there's a guy on E.Bay who sells repair kits for these; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THROTTLE-...457557?hash=item1ec49a2e15:g:xCMAAOSw3ZtaPs7K
so I wondered if it was worth getting one and repairing the old valve, anyone any experience of this? This guy incidentally seems to be the only one who does them, so I am guessing he is the one who makes them and £30 for 2 plastic wheels doesn't really do much for me but them it's a known part repaired by myself for £30, so maybe not that bad, especially as my wife has another BKD A3 (Sportback), same colour even, Awww!
