enyone dun a intercooler upgrade on hear? Is it a pain? It looks like a bit off a pig i belive its in between the fans and aircon i know bumper has to come off but other than that theres not mutch info....Can i fit a universal one? Enyone know the mesherments or limits to what you can fit i might be getting my mates airtec stage 2 cooler but its off a ford st enyone know if i can make it fit ???? thanx....

The APR intercooler installation guide is available to download. This will give you an idea of what to expect. You cannot just fit a random cooler if you want to fit it in the original place between the radiators. Research Welly cooler as a cooler that fits in front of the air con radiator. This needs custom pipework to plumb it in.
A good upgrade for the standard 197 BHP engine is to fit a pre facelift S3 intercooler as they can cope OK up to 350 BHP or so.
I am going to attempt to fit a Wagner cooler over the next couple of weeks and so lots watched of videos for help and ideas.

Thanx so much the apr guide will help me alot. i was thinking off front mounting it and pipe it up im not to botherd with fitting it in the origanal location but would still have to go in a remove original one. Does the front mount fit towords the bottom off the front end then ? as i have seen a few pics like that. Would it work better on the front, as the air con sits infront off the original one? Iv looked into s3 upgrade but im already running at nearly 260hp going for mor aswell.... im well ovredue an intercooler thanx prt57

If you are keen on front mounting and just having one intercooler then the Welly cooler is popular. You need to do lots of research as they need custom pipework. AKS tuning could do that for you. You could run a twintercooler that keeps your original in place and has the extra front mount.
If you want to remove your original cooler you still need to space out the air con radiator. The dodge here is to cut up the original cooler and just fit the end tanks againas they will provide the spacing and locating holes for the bolts. Then the Welly sits under the crash bar.
If you are on 260 BHP then the pre facelift S3 or TTS cooler would be more than good enough and can be had for a good price if you can find one 2nd hand.

2nd vote for S3 intercooler. Good for 400bhp. I picked up a new one for £220.

Thanx evryone im going to have a look at both a decide ill let you know how i get on prt 55 can you take some pics when fitting your wagner cooler? one mor question can i get rid of the aircon all together i dont want it neva been used plus it will get rid off some waight on the heavy a3 enyone done this?

Replacing stock intercooler is a big job
Car on jacks
Wheels off
Wheel liners out
Bumper off
Headlights out
Crash bar off
Radiator out
Oem cooler out
Weller in and its xxxxxxxx tight and doesn’t always line up with standard mounts
Also aircon rad struggle to bolt back with original fixings
Does fit with stock pipes but better with cts pipes from turbo to inlet
Easy just replace everything and fill up the coolant

I have a 2011 S3 oem cooler available not sure if it will fit though do your homework and reserve a day for the job

It can be done without removing the coolant radiator

It can be done without removing wheels, liners, crash bar and headlights too. In fact, you can ease the whole radiator block out on the rhs and drop the intercooler out without disconnecting the aircon pipes etc... but just be careful. A good indie will know how to do this.

I would be surprised at this. You need to move the liners to get the bumper off.
The crash bar /core support need to be out of the way as the intercooler is locked in at the bottom and at the front.
So would be keen to see a video of this!

On the s3 there was no way off doing it any other way, the weller cooler is massive

I started the Wagner installation yesterday on my S3. The Wagner instructions are poor so I am sort of following the APR although they are for a GTI which is subtly different. Progress was slow due to the fact I had to assist my son changing his rear discs and pads on a TTS.
Happy with where I had reached by getting the bumper off.
I’ll do a bit more stripping down during the week with the major intercooler removal and installation next Sunday.
I will buy 2 x long M10 coach bolts as provided with the APR kit so that you can pull the radiator pack and crash bar forward so that it can be supported as I pivot and lift the rad pack out of the core support.

I was referring to replacing it with an OEM S3 intercooler. There is no benefit of fitting something larger for anything but stage 2+ and above on the S3 i.e. 350+ bhp. Put your money towards ARBs or something.

So here is my S3 minus the front bumper. Disconnected most of the electrics and turbo pipes too so far. The Wagner installation has started!
