hey guys,

Has anyone mounted their front numberplate differently on a facelift?

Also is it just screwed on? Stuck on?
Or does it have a numberplate recess ?

Particularly on a S3 grill

Cheers

I've been told it's part of the grille on the FL.. I know that Aoon_n who is doing the RS3 project has moved his plate on the bumper... hopefully an RS grille will be brought out soon for the FL

I've changed my plates like for like, the front was screwed on, but could be stuck on, and it sits in a recess which takes the whole plate.

Mine is a FL BE S-line, so near enough the same front grill.

It sits in a moulded frame that's part of the grille;

The frame takes a uk standard full size plate. It can be screwed on but I much prefer sticking my plates on. Short plates won't fit right, unless you buy printed plates from the likes of four-dot.

Its super annoying they have put that crappy plate on the grill!

The US spec cars have a one piece grill and look far better!

True, it does look better, but many states in the USA allow you to run without a front plate. In California you can get away with having no plates at all, but here in the U.K., the front plate is mandatory, and given the choice of the OEM plate mount and one of those shonky fitting brackets to mount it off to one side, I'll take the OEM grille. Its not ideal, but given the law, it's as good as you get.

I know it's not a facelift but I made a bracket for my tow hook that held the plate nicely when I had an RS style grill on my car

Tuners, modifiers, and car nuts everywhere go to extraordinary lengths to make amazing things, and to make previously ordinary things look amazing, but the "high performance, increased airflow, road-registered-race-car" image I suspect they're going for looks to me much more like an "oh ****** it, I've got to put a number plate on this now. Boll0cks to it, that'll do. Now let's go to the pub" look. It's not just tuners and car nuts that do it though, even Alfa Romeo fell into the trap, but seem somehow to have been forgiven for it.

If I absolutely had to have an RS3 grille, it would have a number plate in the middle of it, or at the very least, A "Show N Go" plate actuator. It's only £135, and will look sooooooo much better....

No actually you're completely wrong. The reason I did this was to make it easier for removal when I went to shows. I designed it with a quick release so it could be removed or installed in a matter of seconds rather than mucking about with cable ties etc.

It's not something I knocked up quickly either. I did a rough CAD design then tweaked it until I was happy with the design, then I machined it from solid aerospace grade aluminium.

I'm not wrong, I just shared an opinion on aesthetics you don't agree with.

Nice!..
But we have been doing it longer and with a lot more class....

:friends:

Ooof. That's a pretty car... A friend of mine owns one of those, minus the guns and plates though. Trivia time...I just finished reading the book "Spies Beneath Berlin", about Operation Gold / Stopwatch, a Cold War project to tunnel into East Berlin and tap the communications cables of the Red Army which were located 19" under a main highway. It seems the real spies were were using them even as Fleming sat down to write Casino Royale. Can't beat a bit of British Ingenuity..
