What helps cleaning the egr valve?

Removing it and brake cleaner

Leave it in petrol overnight and clean off with brake cleaner

If it's off the car then the best thing for cleaning the EGR or the inlet manifold is Mr Muscle foaming oven cleaner.

Contains Sodium Hydroxide and it practically eats through carbon build up (which is why it's a good oven cleaner too!)

Mr muscle is great stuff I used it on my old pd130 intake mani and vnt on the turbo!
