Hi guys

Bit of a weird one this...

I own a B7 S4 and for a while I've noticed a vibration/rumbling noise and sensation when turning slowly. Most noticeable turning out of supermarket car parks etc.

Does not need to be full lock, about half way it will start. Seems to be coming from front wheel area. Does it in both directions.

Nothing noticed at speed or when straight.

My ATF fluid in the gearbox (the front diff is built into the gearbox right?) was changed only a few thousand miles back by Audi when one of the ATF cooler pipes split, so don't think it will be the gearbox fluid needs changing.

Any idea's what could cause this??

Really keen to get it solved!!

Have you checked the tires for any damage? My friends car (also an Audi by chance) experienced some kind of weird vibration when turning and it turned out that one of the radial belts in one of the front tires had broken. I don't know if this can be diagnosed without taking the tire of the rim.....

Hi there

I doubt it's that as it does it on both sides of the car. The tyres are also fairly recent (less than 2,000 miles approx). But you never know...

Any more suggestions guys??

All Quattro cars do it to a certain degree, does it feel like it is skipping slightly.

Tyres make a difference as does wheel alignment and the condition of the control arms.

Aux drive belt/tensioner/alternator clutch pulley can also cause similar vibration..

I've had all of the above with my B7 Quattro at some point.

That's really odd. I've had a few S4's over the last 5-6 years and I don't remember the others doing it?

I'd say it's more of a rumbling sensation than skipping.

Mine's an Auto, not sure if that makes a difference at all?

Same noises on my S4. Apparently it is normal on Quattro's and I did ask the same question on the Audi SRS forum.

That's very interesting... Was there mention of a technical reason why it would do this?

I get the same on my s4 cab. I was a bit concerned when i first heard it on full lock turning slowly and posted on here too but apparently its one of the normal odd things we can expect from time to time.
