Sorry guys if this has been asked before, i'm sure it has.

My 2008 1.8T FSI Sport is due for a service and the bottom line is i'm thinking of doing it myself. I'm confident with tools and pretty sure i know how to service a car.

At the moment it has 84K on the clock with main dealer stamps up to 72K plus one indy at 79K. Just thinking of the old 'residual value vs cost of the services' debate, but at the same time the car's probably worth 5 grand at a push. It's in really good condition and i've always looked after it, and i intend on keeping it for a couple of years all going well so can't seem to justify paying the indy's wages when i can do it myself. I'm sure i can get oil (i always run Castrol Edge), filters, plugs etc for less than £100 and it will take a couple of hours tops i guess. Just thinking that when i do sell it on (which will be privately whatever i buy next) do buyers get really fussy about FSH and all that? I will of course keep all receipts and fill out the book myself to say it's been done.

Funny thing is i feel a but of a hypocrite as i would probably only buy a car with a fully stamped book!

What does anyone reckon?

Would appreciate any advice.

I would service my own car if i felt paying a garage out weight the value. I think the overall condition of the car says alot not just a stamp in a book. Although sometimes it does help.

Thanks for your quick reply mate, much appreciated.

The thing is if the car looked 'well used' i wouldn't think twice about self-servicing, but it really is in very good condition. Hardly a mark on it and impeccable service history do date. I'm happy doing it myself and i know it will be done properly with genuine parts and top quality fluids.

It's just convincing the next buyer down the road which is the problem!

If the car is in good nic I don't imagine an unstamped service will hinder a sale, do remeber you will need the service light re setting though.

I always think, if you intend to run a car into the ground, or as near as, perhaps its not worth dealer service costs, or even indy for that matter.
If you are to sell in a year or so, I would keep the stamps up as the car will still be worth a bit.

get an itemised receipt , or buy main dealer service kit , then record the mileage and date you carried out the work , can't see it putting many people off as you have used genuine parts .

Will do, many thanks for your advice.

Wasn't aware main dealers did a service kit. I was looking to do a full service including oil, oil filter, cabin filter, air filter, plugs. The fuel filter, coolant and brake fluid were done in the last service. I always inspect and grease hinges etc. myself anyway as part of my own routine / ongoing maintenance.

I'm same as you. Recently purchased my a3 tdi with one owner low mileage. It has had two dealer services then receipts for services the owner did himself.
I serviced it on Friday with a cost of £52 for oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and pollen filter. Booked in with my neighbour to have cam belt kit fitted next week so should be fine. I'm just going to run it for probably next 3-4 years. It's a ten year old car so warranty well gone. I'd buy a car with little main dealer history if it has receipts for private servicing and looks looked after. As in past have had main dealer service and they put wrong oil in so who knows what else they tick and don't do right.

Cheers for your advice all, much appreciated.

I think i'll just do it as an experiment and if i have any problems with selling it later on i'll draw from that experience in future. Like you i've had main dealer services before and although most people have good experiences i'm sure, i've had problems in the past. My local indy is a really good guy and i'll still go to him for things i can't do. He's a good bloke and i reckon if i told him i was doing it myself he would say 'good on you mate!'

The thing is even he charges £265 + VAT for a major and i reckon i can do it for a fraction of that. I even have 5 litres of Castrol Edge in the garage so oil is taken car of already. I'll call my local dealership parts dep. tomorrow and get a price for the parts.
