I've been digging around and found that the heat from the turbo can cause the coilpack harness to crack so I'm thinking of ordering these:

1) Coil Pack Wiring Harness Replacement
2) ECS Coil Pack Ignition Solution - Stage I

Have any ASN members used them?

I'm bored of my VAG coil packs braking and my latest one was smoking:

I've ordered a replacement plug and wire repair kit from Audi (about £14) and I have a spare VAG coil pack to get the car back on the road.

I was on the ECS web site a few week's back looking at the RED coilpack's and CP braces. ECS price's are good. Try a group buy, also see if you can get any discount from them if you start up a group.

Yeah I looked at them but I think they're the standard coil packs painted red, I'll still need to replace them in 6 months ;)
The ECS ones are made by Hitachi (which I'm told by a mate are stronger than the standard VAG ones, although he's never used them (which is why I wondered if anyone here had used them?). You can even bolt these down so you don't need to buy the hold down kit.

They do 3 stages, stage 1 includes 4 coil packs and seals/bolts to secure the packs down, stage 2 = same as stage 1 but with the TT225 popper heat shield and stage 3 = stage 2 with NGK spark plugs. I recently changed my plugs so I'm looking at the stage 1 kit.

I'm defiantly getting the harness kit as I repaired the cyl4 loom last night which had welded the first 4inch of wires together, I had a quick look under the rubber seal on cyl3 and could see signs of heat problems so I'm going to replace the lot.

If anyone else in interested in a set ECS coil packs or the harness replacement kit I'll see if they do a group buy with discount.

I don't understand why you are having this problem ? Have you upgraded your turbo or cat, has any of the factory heat shelds been removed..

It's still a standard 190 atm, not even a remap (yet). I've done 140k now and after reading a load of other forums it seems that this isn't an uncommon fault with the 18.t VAG. The heat from the turbo just cooks the harness. Just pop the rubber off one of yours and see if you have any signs of heat issues.

Here's some pictures of mine(sorry pic's aren't great but you can see the damage), you can see a crack on cyl2 so I'll need to replace it before it melts like cyl4 did. don't forget this is just under the rubber, I hate the think what the rest of the harness looks like ;)

My guess is Audi know of the problem as they do a wire repair kit and the 225TT came with this heat shield (which I'll order soon, part num: 8L9 121 659).

I was working on my brothers Leon cupra R last weekend, and noticed that heat shield whilst I was changing the plugs.

I thought at the time that would be a good thing to have on mine! I'm really surprised at how hot it gets under the bonnet of the 1.8t, probably because my last car was a diesel which didn't seem to get anywhere near as hot.

Resurrection!!

Where can one buy that heat shield from? At first glance it looks like fire proof dynamat!

Cheers
