These big engines are a nightmare to work on. Had the same when I put a new alternator on my 2.5tdi T5, whole front end off. Oh, and I had to do it twice :chargrined:
Being in gear only stops the drive pinion of the differential, this would mean you can't push both wheels in the same rotation at the same time (or push the car while it's on the ground).
But with both wheels in the air if you rotate one wheel, the wheel on the opposite side should rotate in the...
If both wheels are in the air then the differential will allow rotation to be transferred between each wheel.
Both wheels should be free to turn, if one wasn't the brake could be binding or something.

Finally got around to fitting an armrest to the S4, have one in the B7 A4 and can't be without it now!
So, no going back at this point...
And now it's in. I'm happy with it, pending a new front latch and deciding whether to get the cover trimmed to match the 'silver' seats or stay black :/...

If you want a tin a bodyshop would be your best option, or if you want an aerosol then there's places online that will make and deliver it.
